Organic Chai Spice Mix — FAQs

Everything you need to know before you order.

Simmer 1–2 teaspoons of Chai Spice Mix per cup in water or milk over low heat. Add black tea leaves or bags if desired and continue to simmer for 5–10 minutes to allow the spices to fully infuse. Strain into a cup and sweeten to taste with honey, maple syrup, or sugar. The spice mix can also be used in baking, porridge, or as a seasoning base for spiced desserts and sauces.
Chai — from the Hindi word for "tea" — has its roots in the Indian subcontinent, where spiced beverages have been prepared for thousands of years in Ayurvedic tradition. The specific combination of spices known as masala chai developed over centuries, with the familiar combination of cardamom, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, and black pepper becoming codified through trade routes that connected India with the Middle East, East Africa, and Southeast Asia. The addition of black tea and milk became widespread in the 19th century during British colonial rule, giving rise to the chai latte format widely consumed today.
Each spice contributes a distinct layer: Cardamom provides the fragrant, citrusy-sweet lift that is the hallmark of chai. Cinnamon gives the warm, woody sweetness that holds the blend together. Ginger adds pungent, zesty heat. Cloves bring intense, fiery warmth and depth. Black Peppercorns contribute a sharp, lively spiciness on the finish. Star Anise adds a distinctive liquorice-like sweetness. Nutmeg rounds out the blend with a subtle, warm nuttiness.
Yes — all seven spices in this mix are certified organic. The Herbal Connection is a Certified Organic business and the blend is produced at our Gold Coast facility from local and imported certified organic spices.
Yes — Ginger may contain naturally occurring sulphites. Sulphites are one of the 14 major food allergens declared under Australian food standards. No other known allergens are present, but trace elements from farming practices may be present. The Herbal Connection makes no allergen-free claims.
Whole and cut spices retain their essential oils and volatile aromatics far longer than pre-ground spices, which lose potency rapidly after milling. Using whole or coarsely cut spices means the mix maintains its full aromatic character across its shelf life. When simmered or steeped in liquid, the spices release their flavour gradually — producing a more complex, rounded cup than ground spice blends, which can taste flat or one-dimensional.
Organic Chai Spice Mix is available in 250g, 500g, 1kg, and 5kg bulk packs. The 5kg option is a bulk pack, not individual units. For larger volumes, contract blending, or private label enquiries, please contact our office directly. We ship Australia-wide from our Gold Coast warehouse.
Store below 23°C in a sealed, dry, dark container away from moisture and direct light. Whole spices are highly aromatic — seal tightly after each use to preserve their essential oils. Shelf life is up to 24 months when stored correctly.
