Rosehip Shell Cut — Rosa canina, Chile

Rosehip Shell Cut (Rosa canina) — the fleshy outer shells of the wild Dog Rose fruit, harvested from the Andes region of Chile, with the inner seeds and the fine irritating hairs that surround them cleanly removed. Rosehips are the small, oval, reddish-orange fruits that form on the rose plant after the flower fades — they have been used in food and beverage applications for centuries across Europe and Central Asia, and are among the most widely used herbal tea ingredients in the world. Chile is one of the largest commercial producers of rosehip for the food and herbal markets, with vast populations of naturalised Rosa canina growing throughout the Andean foothills and providing a sustainable wild harvest source of high quality.

The shell cut format — outer skin only, seeds and hairs removed — is the preferred form for tea infusion because it brews a clear, clean-coloured liquor without the texture issues caused by the fine hairs of the whole fruit. The flavour is distinctly tart, fruity, and slightly floral — comparable to cranberry or sharp apple with a rosy warmth. No known allergens. Naturally caffeine-free. Available in 250g, 500g, 1kg, and 5kg bulk. This product is sold as a food only.

Rosehip Shell Cut — FAQs

Everything you need to know before you order.

A rosehip is the small, oval fruit that forms on the rose plant after flowering. Whole rosehips contain three distinct components: the outer fleshy shell (the red-orange fruit wall), the hard inner seeds, and — critically — fine irritating hairs that surround the seeds inside the fruit. These hairs are the infamous "itching powder" of folklore — if consumed or inhaled, they cause throat and skin irritation. Shell cut rosehips are produced by slicing the fruit, removing the seeds and hairs, and cutting the remaining fruit shell. The result is a product that provides all of the rosehip flavour, colour, and nutritional content of the shell without the irritation risk, and brews into a clear, clean liquor without the fine-hair contamination that requires meticulous straining in whole rosehip preparations.
Rosehip tea brews to a beautiful rosy-orange colour — deeper with longer steeping — and has a distinctly tart, tangy, fruity flavour that is often compared to a mild cranberry or sharp apple with a gentle floral warmth. It is pleasantly acidic without being harsh, and the tartness makes it a natural partner for honey or light sweetening. The overall character is bright, refreshing, and fruity, making it one of the most universally approachable herbal teas. It works equally well hot or iced. Rosehip pairs exceptionally with hibiscus (complementary tartness and colour), apple peel, orange peel, elderberry, cinnamon, and chamomile in tea blends.
Use 1–2 teaspoons per cup in hot water (just off the boil — 90–95°C rather than a full rolling boil, to preserve heat-sensitive compounds). Steep for 10–15 minutes — a longer steep extracts more colour and deepens the flavour. Strain well, then sweeten with honey if desired. Rosehip can also be combined with other botanicals in the same infusion — it pairs well in the pot with hibiscus calyces, apple pieces, cinnamon bark, and orange peel. For iced rosehip tea, brew at double strength, cool, and pour over ice — the colour is particularly striking served cold. For a more concentrated preparation, simmer gently (not boil) for 15–20 minutes.
Shell cut (this product) — the outer fleshy shell of the fruit, cut into coarse pieces, seeds and hairs removed. Best for tea infusion where a clear, clean-flavoured liquid is desired; slower extraction, clean cup. Granules — finely cut rosehip, including more of the fruit material, finer particle size than shells. Faster extraction, suitable for tea bags and blends where a quicker steep is needed. Powder — the whole fruit (including seeds) ground to a fine powder. Not suitable for clear tea infusion — produces a cloudy, thicker preparation; better for smoothies, supplements, and applications where the complete fruit material is desired. All three formats are available in the HC range.
Yes — Certified Organic Rosehip TBC 2–3mm (from Albania) and Organic Rosehip Powder are both available in the HC range for buyers requiring certified organic status. The conventional Chilean shell cut listed here is sourced from wild-harvested Andean rosehips and is a more accessible price point for applications where organic certification is not a labelling or compliance requirement. Contact our office to confirm current availability across the range.
Rosehip Shell Cut is available in 250g, 500g, 1kg, and 5kg bulk packs. The 5kg is bulk packed, not individual units. We ship Australia-wide from our Gold Coast warehouse. For ongoing wholesale supply enquiries, contact us at sales@herbalconnection.com.au or (07) 5451 8780.
