Certified Organic Birch Leaves — Betula pendula, Bulgaria

Certified Organic Birch Leaves (Betula pendula) — the dried leaves of the Silver Birch, sourced from certified organic cultivation in Bulgaria. Betula pendula, commonly known as the Silver or Warty Birch, is a graceful deciduous tree native across Europe and northern Asia, recognisable by its characteristic white-silver bark and delicate, diamond-shaped leaves. The Silver Birch is one of Europe's most widespread and culturally significant trees, and its leaves have a long and well-established history of use in herbal tea traditions across Scandinavia, the Baltic states, Germany, and Eastern Europe — regions where the birch tree holds deep cultural significance.

The dried leaves have a pleasantly mild, gently herbal flavour with a fresh, slightly sweet character — approachable and easy-drinking as a standalone tea, and well-suited to blending with other botanical leaves and floral ingredients. Certified organic from Bulgaria. No known allergens. Naturally caffeine-free. Available in 250g, 500g, 1kg, and 5kg bulk. This product is sold as a food only.

Certified Organic Birch Leaves — FAQs

Everything you need to know before you order.

Birch leaf tea has a distinctly pleasant, mild flavour — gently herbal and slightly sweet, with a clean, fresh character that is sometimes described as faintly reminiscent of wintergreen or a very light, delicate green tea, without the astringency or grassiness of green tea. It is one of the more approachable herbal teas — mild enough to drink without sweetening yet interesting enough to be enjoyable as a standalone cup. The aroma is fresh and characteristically herbal. Compared to more assertive herbal teas like peppermint or hibiscus, birch leaf is gentle and understated — suited to drinkers who prefer subtle, clean-flavoured herbal teas over bold, intensely flavoured varieties. It brews to a pale golden-green colour.
Use 1–2 teaspoons per cup of dried birch leaves. Pour just-off-boil water (90–95°C) over the leaves and steep for 5–10 minutes, covered to retain the mild aromatic compounds. Strain and serve. The flavour is mild at 5 minutes and deepens gently with a longer steep without becoming bitter or harsh — birch leaf does not have the tannin content that makes over-steeped black or green tea astringent. It can be enjoyed plain or with a small amount of honey if desired. Birch leaf blends naturally with nettle leaf, peppermint, lemon balm, and elderflower in herbal wellness blends; it also works as a mild background leaf to anchor more intensely flavoured botanicals in a blend formulation.
Birch leaf has a well-established role in European natural cosmetic and haircare formulations. Infused oil: macerate dried birch leaves in a carrier oil (jojoba, almond, or sunflower) for 4–6 weeks in sunlight for a birch-infused oil for use in hair serums, scalp preparations, and light skin formulations. Tea infusion for hair: a strong birch leaf infusion cooled and applied to the scalp is a traditional preparation in Scandinavian and Baltic haircare traditions. Bath preparations: birch leaf is a traditional ingredient in herbal bath soaks and saunas in Northern European tradition — the aroma of birch in a sauna is deeply culturally significant across Scandinavian, Russian, and Baltic cultures. Skincare formulation: birch leaf extract is used in natural toners, facial mists, and botanical skincare preparations. The certified organic status of this product makes it suitable for certified organic cosmetic formulations.
Birch leaf's mild, clean character makes it a versatile blending ingredient that complements rather than competes. It works particularly well as a supporting leaf alongside: nettle leaf (a classic combination in European herbal tea traditions — both are mild, green, and complementary); lemon balm (citrus-herb brightness lifts birch's subtle flavour); peppermint (the cooling mint note contrasts cleanly with birch's gentle warmth); elderflower (floral sweetness complements birch's mild herbal character); dandelion leaf (a classic European pairing in herbal spring and cleansing blends); and chamomile (adds a floral-sweet dimension to the mild birch base). As a blend component by weight, birch can form 30–50% of a blend without dominating, providing body and green herbal character as a structural ingredient.
These birch leaves are Certified Organic — grown and processed under an accredited organic certification program without synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or fertilisers. The certified organic status is documented through an independent third-party certification body, making this product suitable for use in products labelled as "Certified Organic" where ingredient documentation is required. The Herbal Connection is a Certified Organic business operating from our 5-Star Eat Safe licensed facility on the Gold Coast. Certification documentation is available on request.
