About

A celebrated cultural beverage from South America, Yerba Mate offers a unique experience. Made from the leaves of the native holly tree, it has a characteristically robust, earthy, and bittersweet flavour. It's known for providing a smooth, sustained energy lift, different from coffee or tea.

As always, it's advisable to consult with healthcare professionals for personalised guidance on health concerns.

Directions of Use

1. Traditional Method: Fill a gourd (mate) about one-half to two-thirds full with Yerba Mate leaves.

2. Cover the gourd's opening, turn it upside down, and shake gently to bring the fine particles to the top. Tilt the gourd to one side, creating a slope of leaves.

3. Pour a small amount of cool water into the empty space and let it absorb. This protects the leaves and nutrients. Insert the bombilla (filtered straw) into the empty space.

4. Pour hot (not boiling, approx. 70-80°C) water into the empty space and sip through the bombilla. Do not stir. Refill with hot water multiple times.

5. French Press Method: Use 1-2 tablespoons of leaves per cup of hot (70-80°C) water. Steep for 3-5 minutes and press.

Yerba Mate — FAQs

Everything you need to know before you order.

Yerba Mate (Ilex paraguariensis) is a species of holly tree native to the subtropical rainforests of South America — principally Paraguay, Argentina, southern Brazil, and Uruguay. The dried and cut leaves and stems are steeped as a caffeinated infusion that has been consumed by Indigenous Guaraní people for centuries. The ritual of preparing and sharing mate from a gourd through a metal straw is one of the most deeply embedded cultural traditions in South America and remains central to daily life across the region. This product is sourced from Brazil.
Yerba Mate has a bold, earthy, bittersweet, and herbaceous character — often described as sitting somewhere between a very robust green tea and a bitter herbal infusion. It has a fresh, grassy aroma and a full-bodied, slightly astringent finish that mellows noticeably with subsequent re-infusions. The flavour is assertive and quite unlike floral or fruity teas. Those new to yerba mate often find the second or third infusion more approachable than the first.
Yes — Yerba Mate naturally contains caffeine, along with theobromine and theophylline, two related xanthine alkaloids also found in cacao and black tea. The caffeine level is generally higher than most herbal teas and green teas, though lower than a strong black coffee. The precise amount varies with preparation, water temperature, and steep time. This is not a caffeine-free product.
The gourd (or mate) is the traditional vessel for drinking yerba mate — historically made from a hollowed-out calabash gourd, though today they are also made from wood, ceramic, or metal. The bombilla is a metal straw with a filter at its base that allows you to sip the infusion without swallowing the leaf material. To prepare: fill the gourd about half to two-thirds with dry leaves, cover the opening and shake gently to bring fine particles to the top, tilt to create a slope, pour a small amount of cool water into the empty space first to protect the leaves, then insert the bombilla into the empty space and pour 70–80°C water over the leaves. Sip and refill repeatedly.
Absolutely. A French press works extremely well for yerba mate — use 1–2 tablespoons of cut leaves per cup of water at 70–80°C, steep for 3–5 minutes, then press and pour. A standard teapot with a fine-mesh infuser, a tea sock, or a mesh strainer over a cup all work equally well. The cut leaf format is well-suited to all these methods. Avoid using a standard paper tea bag as the holes are often too fine and restrict infusion.
Boiling water (100°C) scorches the yerba mate leaves and causes the rapid over-extraction of bitter tannins and chlorophyll, producing an unpleasantly harsh and astringent cup. The ideal water temperature is 70–80°C — this extracts the flavour compounds cleanly and allows for multiple enjoyable re-infusions from the same leaves. Using a thermometer is ideal; alternatively, allowing freshly boiled water to sit for 3–4 minutes typically brings it into the right range.
No — botanically, "tea" refers specifically to Camellia sinensis, the tea plant. Yerba Mate is Ilex paraguariensis, a species of holly, and is an entirely different plant. While it is prepared and consumed in a similar way to tea, and shares the characteristic of containing caffeine, it is not a tea in the botanical sense. It is more accurately described as a caffeinated herbal infusion with its own distinct flavour and character.
This conventional (non-certified organic) cut loose leaf is available in 250g, 500g, 1kg, and 5kg bulk packs. The 5kg is bulk packed, not individual units.
