About

The Herbal Connection's Sunflower Kernels are the raw, hulled seeds of the sunflower (Helianthus annuus), grown in Bulgaria and supplied with no added salt, oil or flavouring. With the black-and-white striped hull already removed, they're ready to eat straight from the pack and bring a mild, pleasantly nutty flavour and tender bite to both sweet and savoury recipes. Sunflower kernels naturally contain plant protein, dietary fibre, vitamin E and minerals such as magnesium and zinc, and they're a staple in granola, muesli, breads, trail mixes and seed butters. Available in 250g, 500g and 1kg packs for retail and wholesale customers, with larger bulk cartons also available.

As always, it's advisable to consult with healthcare professionals for personalised guidance on health concerns.

Directions of Use

Hulled, raw and unsalted, these kernels can be enjoyed as they are or lightly toasted to bring out a deeper, nuttier flavour.

1. Snacking: Enjoy a small handful straight from the pack, or combine with dried fruit, nuts and other seeds for a homemade trail mix.

2. Granola & Muesli: Mix through granola, muesli or bircher oats before or after baking for added texture.

3. Baking: Fold into bread doughs, muffins, cookies and energy bars, or scatter over loaves and rolls before baking.

4. Salads & Toppings: Sprinkle over salads, soups, yoghurt, porridge or hummus for a mild, nutty crunch.

5. Toasting: Toast in a dry pan over medium heat for 3–5 minutes, stirring constantly, until lightly golden and fragrant.

6. Seed Butter: Blend toasted kernels with a little oil and a pinch of salt until smooth for a homemade sunflower seed butter.

Sunflower Kernels — FAQs

Answers to the most common questions about buying and using sunflower kernels.

Sunflower kernels are a nutrient-dense wholefood that many people enjoy as part of a balanced diet. They naturally contain plant protein, dietary fibre and mostly unsaturated fats, along with vitamin E, thiamin (vitamin B1), magnesium, zinc and selenium. As they're energy-dense, a small handful (around 30g) is a typical serve. For advice specific to your diet or health needs, it's best to speak with a healthcare professional.
Typical values per 100g are approximately: energy 2,445kJ (about 584 Calories), protein 20.8g, fat 51.5g (saturated 4.5g), dietary fibre 8.6g and sodium 9mg. These are average figures from standard food composition data and may vary slightly between batches.
Our sunflower kernels are raw and unroasted, with no added salt, oil or flavouring. They're already hulled, so they're ready to eat straight from the pack — or you can toast them at home for a deeper, nuttier flavour and extra crunch.
For small batches, toast kernels in a dry frying pan over medium heat for 3–5 minutes, stirring constantly, until lightly golden and fragrant. For larger batches, spread them in a single layer on a baking tray and roast at 160°C for 8–12 minutes, stirring halfway. Watch closely, as their natural oils mean they can burn quickly. Season while warm if you like them salted, and cool completely before storing.
The terms are often used interchangeably. Strictly speaking, a sunflower seed is the whole seed inside its black-and-white striped hull, while the kernel is the edible inner seed with the hull removed. These are kernels — fully hulled, with no shells to crack — which makes them more convenient for baking, granola and cooking.
No — sunflower kernels are seeds, not nuts. They aren't classified as tree nuts or peanuts under Australian food standards, which is why many people use them in seed-based alternatives to nut products. However, The Herbal Connection makes no allergen-free claims, and trace elements of other products may be present. If you have a severe allergy, please contact us before purchasing to discuss handling practices.
Sunflower kernels are one of the most versatile seeds in the kitchen. Add them to granola, muesli and trail mix; fold them into bread doughs, muffins and energy bars; scatter them over salads, soups, yoghurt and hummus; or blend toasted kernels with a little oil and salt to make sunflower seed butter.
Our sunflower kernels are grown in Bulgaria, one of Europe's leading sunflower-producing countries. They are freeze-treated to reduce the risk of insect contamination and packed in food-safe, recyclable or biodegradable materials.
Yes — because sunflower kernels are naturally high in oil, they can turn rancid over time if exposed to heat, light or air. Store them in a sealed, airtight container in a cool, dry, dark place below 23°C. For longer freshness, especially in warmer months, keep them in the fridge or freezer. If kernels smell or taste bitter or stale, it's best to discard them.
