Rooibos tea or red tea is a medicinal, herbal beverage that is acquired from the Aspalathus linearis bush plant found in South Africa. According to the South African Rooibos Council, rooibos is not a true tea, but an herb. The fermented tea is red in colour.  Added to this lovely herb is our chai mix of wonderfully warming spices to give the perfectly balanced caffeine free drink.

Rooibos Chai Organic — FAQs

Everything you need to know before you order.

Rooibos (Aspalathus linearis) — Afrikaans for "red bush" — is a broom-like shrub that grows exclusively in the Cederberg mountain region of South Africa's Western Cape. It has been consumed by the indigenous Khoisan people for centuries and commercially cultivated since the early 20th century. When fermented and dried, the needle-like leaves and stems produce a rich, naturally sweet, mildly earthy red infusion with no caffeine and no bitterness. Rooibos is entirely unique to South Africa — it grows nowhere else on Earth — and is completely unrelated to the Camellia sinensis tea plant.
Yes — completely. Rooibos contains no caffeine, and neither do any of the eight chai spices. This is the key advantage of a Rooibos Chai over a traditional black tea–based chai — you get the full, warming spice character without any caffeine at all. Suitable any time of day, including evenings.
Traditional Indian masala chai uses a black tea (Camellia sinensis) base — typically Assam or Ceylon — combined with warming spices. The black tea provides caffeine, a robust tannin structure, and a malty character that holds the spices. Rooibos Chai replaces the black tea with South African Rooibos, creating a blend that is caffeine-free with a naturally sweeter, more mellow base and lower tannin content. The rooibos doesn't overpower the spices — instead it provides a warm, earthy, slightly sweet canvas on which the cardamom, cinnamon, ginger, and cloves can shine. Both milk-in and black brewing work well.
Yes — Ginger contains naturally occurring sulphites. Sulphites are one of the 14 major food allergens declared under Australian food standards. If you or your customers have a sulphite sensitivity, please take note. The Herbal Connection makes no allergen-free claims and notes that trace elements from farming practices may also be present.
Yes — all nine ingredients are certified organic. The blend is made to order by The Herbal Connection — a Certified Organic business operating from our 5-Star Eat Safe licensed facility on the Gold Coast.
Traditional method: Add 1–2 teaspoons to a saucepan with 1 cup of water. Bring to a boil and simmer for 3–5 minutes. Add milk or a plant-based alternative and simmer for a further 2–3 minutes. Strain and sweeten to taste with honey or sugar. Quick infusion method: Add 1–2 teaspoons to an infuser or teapot. Pour freshly boiled water over the blend and steep for 5–7 minutes — rooibos is very forgiving and won't become bitter. Strain and serve black or with milk. Store below 23°C in a dark, airtight container.
Rooibos Chai Organic is available in 250g, 500g, 1kg, and 5kg bulk packs. The 5kg option is a bulk pack, not individual units.
