Mullein Herb Organic — Verbascum thapsus, Croatia/Bulgaria

Certified Organic Mullein Herb (Verbascum thapsus) — cut and sieved dried leaf from certified organic growing regions in Croatia and Bulgaria. Mullein is one of the most visually striking plants in the European botanical landscape — a tall biennial that in its first year produces a ground-level rosette of exceptionally large, densely felted, soft grey-green leaves, and in its second year sends up a towering flower spike reaching one to two metres in height, densely packed with small yellow flowers. This woolly, velvety texture of the leaf — which gives the plant its common names Velvet Plant and Flannel Leaf — is caused by a covering of fine, star-shaped hairs across the leaf surface. The plant grows naturally across Europe, Asia, and North America in open, disturbed soils and has been a fixture of European botanical and culinary tradition for well over two thousand years.

The dried organic leaf has a mild, gently earthy flavour with a subtle sweetness — one of the softest and most approachable botanicals in the tea blending range. It is not strongly flavoured, bitter, or aromatic, which makes it a neutral, versatile supporting ingredient in herbal tea blends across a wide variety of applications. The characteristic velvety texture of the fresh leaf largely disappears once dried and cut — the 3–8mm cut and sieved format integrates cleanly into loose leaf and pyramid tea bag formulations. Mullein is one of the most widely recognised botanical herbs by Australian consumers in the herbal tea retail category, which makes it a well-understood ingredient for product labelling and marketing. Certified Organic (SCX No. 24041). Freeze-treated. This product is sold as a food only. Conventional grade available at /mullein-herb/. Mullein Herb Powder Organic also available separately.

Mullein Herb Organic — FAQs

Everything you need to know before you order.

Mullein (Verbascum thapsus) is a striking biennial plant native to Europe and Asia, now naturalised across much of the world including Australia. It is one of the most visually distinctive plants in the botanical world — in its first year it produces a ground-level rosette of very large, densely felted, soft grey-green leaves. In its second year it sends up a towering flower spike reaching one to two metres, covered in dense yellow flowers. The characteristic softness of the leaves — caused by fine, star-shaped surface hairs — gives it the common names Velvet Plant and Flannel Leaf. It grows naturally in disturbed soils, roadsides, and dry open ground across Europe, and has been documented in European botanical tradition since ancient times.
Mullein has one of the mildest flavour profiles in the herb tea range — gently earthy with a subtle natural sweetness and no significant bitterness or strong aroma. It is soft and neutral, making it an easy herb to blend with others without introducing a competing flavour note. Brew 1–2 teaspoons per cup in hot water, covered, for 10–15 minutes. Strain well before serving — the fine leaf hairs, though greatly reduced in the dried and cut form, are worth removing with a fine strainer or muslin cloth. The resulting infusion is a pale, lightly coloured liquor with a mild, clean herbal character. Mullein pairs naturally with peppermint, marshmallow root, liquorice root, thyme, and ginger in botanical blend formulations.
Fresh mullein leaf is covered in fine, star-shaped surface hairs that give it its characteristic velvety texture. Once the leaf is dried and cut to 3–8mm, most of this texture is reduced — but fine particles can remain and may cause irritation to the throat if not removed before drinking. This is not a safety concern but a comfort one. Always use a fine mesh strainer, muslin cloth, or tea bag format when brewing mullein to ensure a clean, smooth infusion. For tea bag applications, the cut format is well suited to non-woven pyramid tea bags which provide effective filtration of fine herb particles. This straining consideration is well known in the European mullein tea tradition and is worth noting in product labelling or brewing instructions for finished consumer products.
This Mullein Herb is grown without synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or chemical fertilisers and is certified under The Herbal Connection's SCX Organic Certification No. 24041. Suitable for use in certified organic finished products where full supply chain traceability through an audited certification body is required. Organic certification documentation is available on request at sales@herbalconnection.com.au. A conventional (non-organic) grade (HT.MULK1) is also available at a lower price point for buyers who do not require organic certification in their finished product. Mullein Herb Powder Organic is also available separately for buyers requiring a powdered format.
Mullein is one of the most widely used botanical herbs in the Australian and European natural health retail market — it is well recognised by name by consumers in the herbal tea category, which makes it a strong labelling ingredient for product marketing. In blend formulations, it typically functions as a supporting botanical at 15–30% of blend weight, contributing body and mild botanical character without asserting a strong flavour of its own. It blends well alongside peppermint (brightness), marshmallow root (complementary mild sweetness and mucilaginous texture), liquorice root (natural sweetness), thyme (aromatic contrast), and ginger (warmth). The 3–8mm cut size is suitable for both loose leaf and pyramid tea bag formats — use a fine strainer or non-woven bag to catch fine particles. A practical guide to using mullein is available on the HC blog: How to Use Mullein.
Certified Organic Mullein Herb is available in 250g, 500g, 1kg, and 5kg bulk packs.
