Maca Powder Premium Organic — Lepidium meyenii, Junín Plateau, Peru

Certified Organic Maca Powder (Lepidium meyenii) — sourced from certified organic farms on the Junín plateau of the high Andes, grown at altitudes of 4,000 metres and above. Maca is a cruciferous root vegetable in the same family as broccoli, cauliflower, and kale — though it looks nothing like them. The plant produces a small, turnip-like root in the harsh, windswept conditions of the high Andes puna grasslands, an environment few plants can survive. This extreme environment is central to the maca story: the high-altitude cold, intense UV radiation, and mineral-rich volcanic soils produce a denser, more complex root than lower-altitude growing. The Junín plateau in central Peru is the traditional and commercial heartland of Andean maca cultivation, with a documented history of human use stretching back over 2,000 years.

This is yellow maca — the most common and commercially versatile variety, with a characteristic earthy, malt-forward flavour and a warm, faintly nutty undertone. The flavour is distinctive and assertive, particularly at higher inclusion rates. It is one of the most widely used Peruvian superfood ingredients in Australian functional food and supplement manufacturing — well established in the market, understood by consumers, and a reliable seller in health food retail. Used in smoothies, protein powders, energy bars, latte blends, and supplement capsules. Fine milled for easy blending. Certified Organic (SCX No. 24041). This product is sold as a food ingredient only.

Maca Powder Premium Organic — FAQs

Everything you need to know before you order.

Maca (Lepidium meyenii) is a cruciferous root vegetable in the same plant family as broccoli, cauliflower, and kale, native to the Junín plateau of the high Peruvian Andes — one of the harshest growing environments on Earth, at altitudes above 4,000 metres. It has been cultivated and consumed in the Andes for over 2,000 years, making it one of the oldest documented Andean food crops. The nickname "Peruvian Ginseng" reflects its long-standing status as a prized, high-value root crop — similar to the market position of ginseng in East Asia — rather than any botanical relationship to actual ginseng plants. It is a food ingredient, sold and consumed as a food.
Maca naturally grows in several colour varieties — yellow, red, and black — which differ in relative abundance, flavour profile, and phytochemical composition. Yellow Maca (this product) — the most common variety, comprising approximately 60–70% of the Junín harvest. It has the classic maca flavour: earthy, malty, and slightly nutty. It is the most versatile for blending and the most widely stocked commercially. Red Maca — less common, slightly sweeter and less intense than yellow; often marketed for women's health. Black Maca — rarest variety, most assertive and earthy flavour; often marketed for men's health and athletic performance. All three are the same species. Yellow maca is the standard choice for general food manufacturing and supplement formulation.
Maca has a distinctive earthy, malt-forward flavour with a warm, faintly nutty undertone — assertive and recognisable. The flavour can be polarising at higher inclusion rates, so most manufacturers use it at 5–15g per serve where it contributes character without overwhelming the blend. It pairs well with: cacao/chocolate (the richness masks maca's earthiness); banana (naturally sweet and complementary); vanilla and caramel flavours; nut butters (almond and peanut); and warming spices like cinnamon. In protein powders, use at 5–10% of blend — it adds both flavour and the "Peruvian maca" ingredient call-out on the label. In lattes, use at 1–2 teaspoons per cup with your milk of choice.
