Limetree (Linden) Flowers — Tiliae argenteae, Bulgaria

Limetree Flowers (Tiliae argenteae) — the dried flowers and characteristic wing-shaped bract of the Silver Linden, sourced from Bulgaria, which is one of the world's most significant commercial producers of linden flower for the herbal tea market. The Limetree, or Linden, is a large deciduous tree native to Europe and western Asia, and its flowers have been gathered and dried for use in herbal tea across central and eastern Europe, France, and the Mediterranean for centuries — the French tilleul (linden flower infusion) is one of the most deeply embedded traditional herbal teas in European culture, enjoyed widely as a gentle, pleasant evening drink. In North America the same tea is known as linden blossom.

The dried flowers have a distinctly appealing character: gently sweet, soft, and warmly floral with a light honey-like quality and a subtle grassy warmth. The pale greenish-yellow bract (the wing-shaped modified leaf attached to the flower stalk) is included with the flowers and is traditional to the preparation — its presence identifies an authentic, well-processed linden flower product. No known allergens. Naturally caffeine-free. Available in 250g, 500g, 1kg, and 5kg bulk. This product is sold as a food only.

Limetree (Linden) Flowers — FAQs

Everything you need to know before you order.

Linden flower (limetree blossom) comes from the dried flowers of Tilia species — large, long-lived deciduous trees native to Europe and western Asia that produce small, pale yellow flowers with a sweet, intensely honeyed fragrance in early summer. In France the tea is called tilleul and is one of the most commonly consumed herbal teas in the country, drunk widely as a gentle evening infusion. The taste is distinctly pleasant: gently sweet, soft, and floral with a light honey-like quality — not sharp or intensely aromatic, but warmly soothing in character. It is one of the mildest and most universally approachable herbal teas, with a character that is delicate enough to drink without sweetening and gentle enough for most palates including those who don't typically enjoy herbal tea.
Use 1–2 teaspoons per cup of just-off-boil water (90–95°C). Cover the cup and steep for 5–10 minutes — covering is important as it retains the delicate volatile aromatic compounds that contribute to the flavour. Strain and serve. Linden flower tea is very pleasant unsweetened, or with a small amount of honey which complements the naturally floral-honey character beautifully. It brews to a pale golden-yellow colour with a soft, gentle fragrance. It works well as a standalone infusion or blended with chamomile, passionflower, lavender, or rose petals in floral and calming tea blend formulations.
The pale, papery, wing-shaped pale green leaf included with the flowers is the bract — a modified leaf from which the flower stalk grows. In linden, the bract and flower are naturally attached and are harvested together. Its inclusion is traditional and is actually a quality indicator — properly harvested and processed linden flower should include the bract. The bract adds mild aromatic compounds to the infusion and contributes to the characteristic appearance of quality linden flower product. It is perfectly edible and safe to infuse.
Linden flower's soft, sweet, honey-floral character blends harmoniously with a wide range of botanicals without competing. It works particularly well with chamomile (complementary mild floral sweetness — a natural pairing), lavender (adds aromatic depth while linden softens lavender's intensity), passionflower (popular pairing in calming and evening blend categories), lemon balm (citrus-herb brightness contrasts with linden's sweetness), rose petals (floral complement), and valerian root (popular in traditional evening tea formulations where linden helps round the earthy valerian character). It also works well with peppermint in light, fresh blends where a background sweetness is needed, and with apple peel and elderflower in fruity-floral combinations.
