About

Lemon Verbena Organic is a certified organic cut leaf prized for its bright, sweet sherbet-lemon aroma and flavour. Often called the queen of the citrus herbs, it delivers a cleaner, rounder lemon character than lemon balm or lemongrass, without bitterness or acidity. Our current batches are sourced from Morocco and Portugal and selected for exceptional colour, fragrance and leaf integrity.

Lemon verbena tea has been enjoyed across Europe and North Africa for generations, and the herb is traditionally taken as a soothing after-dinner infusion. Beyond the teacup, the cut leaf is a favourite of tea blenders, distillers, bakers and cooks for syrups, desserts, cordials and infused vinegars.

As always, it's advisable to consult with healthcare professionals for personalised guidance on health concerns.

Directions of Use

Supplied as a dried cut leaf, ready to infuse or blend. A little goes a long way - the aroma is intense.

1. Hot tea: Add 1-2 teaspoons of cut leaf per cup, pour over water just off the boil and steep for 5-7 minutes. Strain and serve plain or with a little honey.

2. Iced tea: Steep 2 tablespoons per litre of hot water for 10 minutes, strain, then chill. Pairs well with mint, hibiscus or a squeeze of lime.

3. Blending: Use as a citrus top note in herbal, green or black tea blends at 10-25% of the blend by weight.

4. Culinary: Infuse into simple syrup, cream or custard for desserts and cordials, or steep in white vinegar for salad dressings. Strain before use.

Lemon Verbena Organic — FAQs

Everything you need to know about our certified organic lemon verbena

Lemon verbena tea is a caffeine-free herbal infusion made from the dried leaves of Aloysia citriodora. It has an intense, sweet sherbet-lemon aroma and a smooth, clean citrus flavour with none of the sourness of actual lemon. Many people describe it as the most "lemony" of all the lemon-scented herbs. It's enjoyed hot or iced, on its own or as the citrus note in a blend.
Lemon verbena has a long history of traditional use in Europe and North Africa as a relaxing evening tea and a soothing after-meal infusion. Many people enjoy it as part of a calming wind-down routine, and it is naturally caffeine-free. These are traditional uses rather than proven health outcomes - this product is sold as a food only. Please speak with a healthcare professional for personalised advice.
Use 1-2 teaspoons of cut leaf per cup (roughly 1.5-3g), pour over water just off the boil and steep for 5-7 minutes before straining. For iced tea, use around 2 tablespoons per litre, steep 10 minutes, strain and chill. Because our cut leaf is highly aromatic, start at the lower end and adjust to taste - over-steeping can bring out a slightly grassy note.
They're different plants from different families. Lemon verbena (Aloysia citriodora) has a strong, sweet, sherbet-like lemon flavour. Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) is in the mint family and is milder, greener and more herbaceous. Compared with lemongrass it's less grassy and gingery, and compared with Australian lemon myrtle it's softer and rounder rather than sharp and citral-forward. For the purest "lemon" flavour in a tea, lemon verbena is usually the pick.
Yes. Aloysia citriodora (also written Aloysia citrodora, and formerly Aloysia triphylla or Lippia citriodora) is the botanical name for lemon verbena. It is not the same plant as common verbena or vervain (Verbena officinalis), which has a very different, bitter flavour. Our Ingredient Declaration lists the botanical name so you can be sure of exactly what you're buying.
Plenty. Infuse the leaves into simple syrup for cordials and cocktails, steep them in warm cream or milk for panna cotta, ice cream and custards, or add to poaching liquid for fruit. They make a beautiful infused vinegar for dressings, work well in gin and spirit botanicals, and are a classic addition to herbal tea blends, potpourri and sachets. Always strain the leaves out before serving.
Our lemon verbena is grown in Morocco and Portugal, two of the world's best-known regions for the herb, and imported directly into our HACCP-certified facility on the Gold Coast, Queensland. You can buy it right here in 250g, 500g and 1kg packs with Australia-wide delivery, and wholesale accounts can order a 5kg bulk carton at a discounted rate.
Yes. Lemon Verbena Organic is covered under The Herbal Connection's SCX Organic Certification (Cert No. 24041), and our facility is HACCP certified. Organic certificates, a certificate of analysis and allergen documentation are available on request - email sales@herbalconnection.com.au.
We can't give individual medical advice. Lemon verbena is widely consumed as a culinary herb and tea, but as with any herbal product, if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, taking medication or managing a health condition, please check with your doctor, midwife or a qualified healthcare professional before adding it to your routine.
