Our premium Hops Flowers (Humulus lupulus) are a versatile staple for both the craft brewing community and traditional herbalists. Sourced for their vibrant lupulin content, these dried whole cones provide the essential bitterness and citrusy aroma required for classic Australian Pale Ales. Beyond the brew, Hops Flowers are a cornerstone of natural wellness, widely used in bedtime tea blends and sleep pillows for their legendary calming properties. Whether you are bittering a home brew or formulating a relaxing botanical tonic, these flowers deliver professional-grade potency and freshness.

As always, it's advisable to consult with healthcare professionals for personalised guidance on health concerns.

Directions of Use

1. Home Brewing: Add during the boil for bitterness, or "dry hop" in the fermenter for intense floral and citrus aromas in your Pale Ale or IPA.

2. Wellness Tea: Steep 1-2 heaping teaspoons in hot water for 5-10 minutes. Warning: Hops are naturally very bitter; we recommend blending with Chamomile or Peppermint and adding honey.

3. Sleep Pillows: Place a handful of dried cones inside a small sateen pouch and tuck it into your pillowcase to enjoy the natural, sedative aromatic oils.

4. Botanical Extracts: Macerate in high-proof spirits or glycerine for 4-6 weeks to create your own potent relaxation tincture.

Hops Flowers — Whole Dried Cones, Humulus lupulus, Poland

Hops Flowers (Humulus lupulus L.) — whole dried hop cones sourced from Poland, one of Europe's significant hop-growing regions. The hop plant is a vigorous perennial climbing vine in the Cannabaceae family, and it is the strobiles (the papery, cone-shaped female flower clusters) that are dried and used commercially. Hops are most widely known as the essential bittering, flavouring, and aromatic botanical in beer production — they are the ingredient responsible for beer's characteristic bitterness, which balances the sweetness of malt, and for the diverse aromatic profiles from floral and citrusy to earthy and resinous that define different beer styles. Beyond brewing, hops have a long history in European herbal tea traditions, particularly in herbal blends for evening use.

The dried cones contain lupulin glands — visible as a yellow-gold powder when the cone is broken apart — which hold the alpha acids responsible for bitterness in brewing, and the essential oils that contribute aroma. Quality cones should be vibrant green-gold with a pungent, complex aroma and clearly visible lupulin. No known allergens. Available in 250g, 500g, 1kg, and 5kg bulk. This product is sold as a food only and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

Hops Flowers — FAQs

Everything you need to know before you order.

Whole hop cones are used at two main stages in the brewing process. Bittering hops (boil addition): add to the boil early (60–90 minutes before the end) to isomerise the alpha acids that provide bitterness — the longer the boil, the more bitterness is extracted. The aroma compounds mostly volatilise during a long boil so this stage is primarily about bitterness contribution. Aroma and late additions: add in the final 5–15 minutes of the boil, or at flameout (immediately after removing from heat), to preserve volatile aroma compounds that provide the floral, citrus, and herbal character. Dry hopping: add whole cones directly to the fermenter after primary fermentation to extract aroma without bitterness — this is the most effective way to achieve intense hop aroma. Whole cones are preferred by many brewers for dry-hopping as they act as a natural filter, are easy to remove, and produce a distinctive "green" hop aroma character compared to pellets.
Lupulin is the fine yellow-gold powder found at the base of the petals (bracteoles) inside a hop cone — it is visible when you pull the cone apart and is the substance that contains virtually all of the useful compounds in hops for both brewing and other applications. Alpha acids (humulone and its analogues) are the primary bittering compounds — they isomerise during the boil to produce iso-alpha acids, which are responsible for beer's bitterness. Beta acids (lupulone and analogues) contribute to preservation and some aroma. Essential oils (myrcene, humulene, caryophyllene, farnesene, and others) are responsible for the diverse aromatic character of different hop varieties — from citrus and tropical fruit to earthy, resinous, and floral. Lupulin content and quality is the most important indicator of hop quality — high-quality cones should have abundant visible yellow lupulin and a strong, complex aroma when broken open.
Yes — hops have a long and well-established history in European herbal tea traditions, particularly in blends traditionally consumed in the evening. As a standalone tea, hops are intensely bitter and the taste is challenging — blending with sweeter or milder herbs significantly improves palatability. To brew: steep 1–2 teaspoons of dried hops in hot water for 5–10 minutes; blending with chamomile, peppermint, lemon balm, passionflower, or linden flower helps balance the bitterness. Sweetening with honey is recommended. Hops tea has a very distinctive, strongly aromatic, bitter flavour profile — it is an acquired taste as a standalone beverage and is most practically used as a minor component (10–20% by weight) in herbal blends where its distinctive character contributes complexity without dominating. This product is sold as a food only and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
Hops are significantly more sensitive to storage conditions than most dried botanicals — the alpha acids and essential oils that make hops valuable begin to oxidise and degrade when exposed to oxygen, light, and heat. Short-term storage (within 3–4 months of opening): keep in a sealed, airtight container below 23°C in a dark location. Long-term storage: refrigeration slows degradation significantly; freezing in a sealed, airtight bag or container is the most effective way to preserve freshness and potency for extended periods — whole hop cones frozen in a sealed bag maintain quality for considerably longer than ambient storage. Avoid repeatedly opening and closing the storage container, as each exposure to air accelerates oxidation. Signs of deterioration include a cheesy or musty smell (rather than the fresh citrusy-herbal aroma) and faded, yellow-brown colour instead of vibrant green.
Beyond brewing and herbal tea, hops have several established applications. Distillery: hops can be used as a botanical in gin and craft spirits, contributing a distinctive bitter-floral character — a small quantity of cones in the botanical basket of a pot still provides a clean, herbal, slightly bitter note. Sleep pillows: dried whole hop cones have a long traditional use in sachets and pillows where the characteristic aroma of the dry cones is the primary function — place a small handful of whole cones in a cotton or linen sachet and tuck into bedding. Botanical extracts: whole cones can be macerated in high-proof spirits or food-grade glycerine for 4–6 weeks to produce a hop extract for culinary or brewing use. Culinary: hops shoots (young growing tips) are a traditional European vegetable; the cones themselves can be used in small quantities in artisan bread and specialty food products where hop bitterness and aroma is desired.
