Goji Berry Whole — Lycium barbarum, China

Whole Goji Berries (Lycium barbarum) — sun-dried whole berries sourced from China, the world's primary commercial producer of goji berries. Lycium barbarum, the Wolfberry or Chinese Wolfberry, is a member of the Solanaceae family native to northwest China, with the Ningxia province considered the premier growing region for premium quality berries. The dried berries are 3–5mm in length with a distinctive vivid red-orange colour and a characteristic sweet-tart flavour reminiscent of dried cherry with mild fruity tartness, and a slightly chewy texture. This is the conventional (non-certified-organic) goji berry — the most accessible price point in the HC goji range, suited to applications where certified organic status is not required.

Whole goji berries are a versatile food ingredient used in snacking, breakfast foods, granola, trail mix, baking, and as a brewing ingredient for tea infusions. Important allergen note: this product contains naturally occurring sulphites at approximately 10mg/kg — a mandatory declared allergen under FSANZ regulations. Volume discount of 5% applies on orders of 20–100 units. Available in 250g, 500g, 1kg, and 5kg bulk. This product is sold as a food only.

Goji Berry Whole — FAQs

Everything you need to know before you order.

This product (FR.GOJIK1) and the Goji Berry Whole Organic (HTO.GOJIWK1) are the same species — Lycium barbarum from China — in the same whole sun-dried berry format. The difference is certification status and price. The conventional product has not been certified to organic growing standards and is priced accordingly at approximately half the cost of the certified organic equivalent. For applications where certified organic status is not required — food manufacturing where the organic certification of this specific ingredient is not part of the product's positioning, animal feed, tea blending for non-organic products — the conventional berry delivers the same flavour, colour, and format at a significantly lower price point. Where the finished product claims organic status or where organic certification is required by the buyer's standards, the Goji Berry Whole Organic is the appropriate choice.
Sulphites occur naturally in goji berries as a by-product of the fruit's natural chemistry and the drying process — they are not added as a preservative. Under FSANZ (Food Standards Australia New Zealand) regulations, sulphites must be declared as an allergen on food labels when present at or above 10mg/kg. These berries contain naturally occurring sulphites at approximately 10mg/kg, at the mandatory declaration threshold. For food manufacturers and product formulators using these berries as an ingredient: your finished product label must include a sulphite allergen declaration. Consumers with known sulphite sensitivity — particularly those with asthma — should be aware of this declaration and consult a healthcare professional before use.
Tea and infusions: steep 1–2 tablespoons of whole berries in hot water for 5–10 minutes for a lightly sweet, fruity tisane — a traditional application in Chinese herbal tea culture; also pairs well with chrysanthemum, red dates, and other fruit teas. Snacking: eaten directly from the pack; the chewy texture and sweet-tart flavour make them a standalone snack or trail mix inclusion. Breakfast foods: sprinkle over granola, muesli, porridge, and smoothie bowls. Rehydrating: soak in warm water for 5–10 minutes to soften to a near-fresh berry texture before adding to smoothies, sauces, and savoury dishes. Baking: fold into muffins, granola bars, and energy balls in the same way as raisins or dried cranberries. Traditional Chinese cooking: added to soups, congee, and braised dishes as a food ingredient with a long culinary history.
Yes — Lycium barbarum is a member of the Solanaceae (nightshade) family, the same botanical family as tomatoes, capsicum, eggplant, and potatoes. Individuals following a strict nightshade-exclusion diet (sometimes associated with autoimmune protocols) should note this botanical classification. The nightshade family classification is a dietary consideration rather than an allergen declaration — goji berries are not a recognised food allergen under FSANZ, with the exception of the naturally occurring sulphites which are declared separately. For most people, goji berries are well tolerated as a food ingredient.
The HC goji range covers multiple formats and certification levels. Goji Berry Whole (this product, FR.GOJIK1) — conventional, most accessible price point, 3–5mm whole berries. Goji Berry Whole Organic (HTO.GOJIWK1) — certified organic equivalent at a higher price point. Goji Berry Black Whole Organic — certified organic black goji berries (Lycium ruthenicum), a different species with distinctive dark purple-black colour and pH-reactive anthocyanin pigments, at a premium price. Goji Berry Freeze-Dried Powder Organic — certified organic powder for formulation and beverage applications. Goji Berry Powder Extract 10:1 — concentrated extract for supplement formulation.
