Certified Organic Goji Berry Whole — Lycium barbarum, China

Certified Organic Whole Goji Berries (Lycium barbarum) — naturally sun-dried whole berries sourced from certified organic farms in China, the world's primary commercial producer of goji berries. Lycium barbarum, the Wolfberry or Chinese Wolfberry, is a member of the Solanaceae (nightshade) family, a deciduous woody perennial shrub native to northwest China and Tibet. The berries have been cultivated and used as a food ingredient in China for thousands of years, long before the global popularity of "superfoods" brought them to Western markets. The Ningxia province of China is considered the principal production region for premium goji berries, where the specific climate and soil conditions are considered ideal for berry quality.

The dried berries have a distinctive sweet-tart flavour — reminiscent of a cross between a dried cherry and a cranberry — with a slightly chewy texture and a vivid, bright red-orange colour. They are used extensively as a snacking ingredient, in breakfast foods (granola, muesli, porridge), baking, tea, and functional food formulations. Important allergen note: this product contains naturally occurring sulphites at approximately 10mg/kg — sulphites are a mandatory FSANZ-declared allergen at ≥10mg/kg. Certified organic from China. Volume discount of 5% applies for orders of 20–100 units. Available in 250g, 500g, 1kg, and 5kg bulk. This product is sold as a food only.

Certified Organic Goji Berries — FAQs

Everything you need to know before you order.

Sulphites (sulphur dioxide and sulphite compounds) occur naturally in many foods and are also used as preservatives in conventional dried fruit. In certified organic goji berries, sulphites are naturally occurring rather than added — they are produced as a natural by-product of the drying process in the berry. Under FSANZ (Food Standards Australia New Zealand) regulations, sulphites must be declared as an allergen on food labels when present at or above 10mg/kg, as they can cause reactions in sulphite-sensitive individuals — particularly those with asthma. These organic berries contain naturally occurring sulphites at approximately 10mg/kg, at the mandatory declaration threshold. Buyers producing packaged food products using these berries as an ingredient must ensure their product label includes a sulphite allergen declaration. Consumers with known sulphite sensitivity should consult a healthcare professional before use.
Direct snacking: whole goji berries can be eaten straight from the pack — the chewy texture and sweet-tart flavour make them an appealing standalone snack or trail mix ingredient alongside nuts, seeds, and other dried fruits. Breakfast foods: sprinkle over oatmeal, porridge, granola, muesli, and smoothie bowls where the vivid red-orange colour and sweet-tart flavour make them visually striking and flavourful. Soaking and rehydrating: soak in warm water for 5–10 minutes to soften before adding to recipes, smoothies, or sauces — soaked goji berries have a texture closer to fresh soft fruit. Baking: fold through muffin batters, granola bars, cookies, and energy balls — they behave similarly to dried cranberries in baking applications. Tea: steep 1–2 tablespoons of whole berries in hot water for 5–10 minutes for a lightly sweet, fruity tisane; pairs well with red dates, chrysanthemum, and wolfberry in traditional Chinese herbal tea blends. Savoury cooking: in Chinese cuisine, goji berries are traditionally used in soups, congee, and braised meat dishes.
Conventional goji berry production has historically been associated with high pesticide use, and goji berries sourced from China have periodically been flagged by food safety authorities in various countries for pesticide residue concerns. Certified organic goji berries are grown without synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or fertilisers, with the certification providing documented traceability and independent auditing of the growing and processing conditions. For buyers formulating certified organic food products, certified organic goji berries provide the necessary documentation for organic labelling compliance. The price premium over conventional reflects the lower yields and higher compliance costs of organic cultivation.
The HC goji range covers three products. Goji Berry Whole Organic (this product, HTO.GOJIWK1) — certified organic whole sun-dried red berries, China. Goji Berry Whole (conventional, HT.GOJIWK or similar) — conventional whole goji berries at a more accessible price point for applications where certified organic status is not required. Goji Berry Black Whole Organic — certified organic black goji berries (Lycium ruthenicum) — a different species with distinctive dark purple-black colour and pH-reactive anthocyanin pigments (turns blue in alkaline conditions), at a significantly higher price point. Goji Berry Freeze-Dried Powder Organic — currently out of stock; certified organic freeze-dried goji powder for formulation applications. Contact our office to confirm current availability across the range.
Yes — Lycium barbarum is a member of the Solanaceae family, which includes tomatoes, capsicum, eggplant, potatoes, and the deadly nightshade. This is relevant for individuals who follow a strict nightshade-free diet (sometimes associated with autoimmune protocols). The berries themselves are not known to cause the same reactions associated with other nightshades in most people, but those following a nightshade exclusion diet should be aware of the botanical family. The product contains no known allergens beyond the declared naturally occurring sulphites — the nightshade family classification is a dietary consideration rather than an allergen declaration.
The standard sizes listed — 250g, 500g, 1kg, and 5kg — are our regular stocked wholesale pack sizes, with a 5% volume discount for orders of 20–100 units. The Herbal Connection is a wholesale supplier and can accommodate bulk orders well beyond these standard sizes. Whether you are a health food retailer, food manufacturer, granola or muesli producer, functional food brand, or large-scale buyer with ongoing volume requirements, we can discuss pricing and supply arrangements to suit your needs. Contact our wholesale team at sales@herbalconnection.com.au to discuss your specific requirements.
