Certified Organic Goji Berry Freeze-Dried Powder — Lycium barbarum, China

Certified Organic Goji Berry Freeze-Dried Powder (Lycium barbarum) — certified organic goji berries from China, processed by freeze-drying then milled to a fine powder. The freeze-drying process is the defining characteristic of this product and what distinguishes it from conventionally dried goji berry powder. In freeze-drying (lyophilisation), the berries are first frozen at very low temperature, then subjected to low pressure, causing the ice to sublimate (convert directly from solid to vapour) without passing through a liquid stage — this removes nearly all moisture while keeping the temperature of the product consistently low throughout the process. The result is a powder that retains the vivid orange-red colour of the fresh berry far more faithfully than heat-dried alternatives, along with a more intense and true-to-fruit sweet-tart flavour.

The powder has a bright orange-red colour and a concentrated sweet-tart goji berry flavour — it disperses readily into smoothies, beverages, and food formulations, where the colour provides a distinctive natural vivid tone. Certified organic from China. Note: this product contains naturally occurring sulphites — declare on finished product labels as required. Available in 250g, 500g, 1kg, and 5kg bulk.

Goji Berry Freeze-Dried Powder — FAQs

Everything you need to know before you order.

Freeze-drying (lyophilisation) is a premium drying method that removes moisture at very low temperature under reduced pressure, avoiding the heat exposure that occurs in conventional hot-air drying. The practical difference in the finished powder is significant: colour — freeze-dried goji powder retains a vivid, bright orange-red colour closely resembling the fresh berry; conventionally heat-dried goji powder tends toward duller, darker, more brownish-orange tones as heat-sensitive pigments degrade during drying. Flavour — the sweet-tart, fresh, true-to-fruit goji flavour is better preserved; heat drying can caramelise sugars and alter the aromatic volatile compounds that give goji its characteristic flavour. For applications where colour intensity and flavour fidelity are important — premium smoothie formulations, food colourant applications, retail packaged powders — freeze-dried product is the preferred choice. The price premium reflects the significantly higher processing cost of freeze-drying vs conventional drying.
Smoothies and smoothie bowls: 1–2 teaspoons blended into fruit smoothies — the powder disperses instantly and contributes vivid colour and sweet-tart goji flavour. Functional powder blends: a natural ingredient for superfood powder formulations, breakfast drink blends, and wellness powder mixes where goji's vivid colour and flavour are desired in a dispersible format. Yoghurt and dairy: stir through yoghurt, mix into frozen yoghurt, and blend into dairy and non-dairy ice cream bases for colour and flavour. Baking: fold into muffins, energy balls, protein bars, and granola bars. Natural food colouring: the vivid orange-red colour can function as a natural food colouring agent in beverages, yoghurt, icing, and confectionery — the colour is water-soluble and disperses evenly. Beverage manufacturing: incorporate into cold-pressed juice blends, functional beverages, and kombucha for natural colour and flavour.
Goji berries (both whole and powder) contain naturally occurring sulphites as a by-product of the fruit's natural chemistry — this is not an added preservative. Sulphites are a mandatory declared allergen under FSANZ regulations when present at or above 10mg/kg. The whole goji berry (HTO.GOJIWK1) is declared at approximately 10mg/kg. The level in the freeze-dried powder should be confirmed with current CoA documentation, as concentration may vary between batches. Buyers producing packaged finished food products using this powder as an ingredient should ensure their product labels include a sulphite allergen declaration. Consumers with known sulphite sensitivity should consult a healthcare professional before use. Contact our office at sales@herbalconnection.com.au to request current batch CoA documentation confirming sulphite levels.
The HC goji range covers three distinct formats at different price points and with different applications. Goji Berry Whole Organic (HTO.GOJIWK1) — whole sun-dried berries; used for snacking, trail mix, granola, and brewing as tea where the whole berry form is preferred. The lowest price point per gram. Goji Berry Freeze-Dried Powder Organic (this product, HTO.GOJIPK1) — freeze-dried to preserve colour and flavour, milled to powder; used in smoothies, food manufacturing, natural colourant applications, and formulations where a dispersible powder is needed. Premium price reflects processing cost. Goji Berry Powder Extract 10:1 — a concentrated extract (10kg of berry produces 1kg of extract); used in supplement formulation and applications where a very small quantity of highly concentrated ingredient is required. Each format serves a different application — contact us to discuss which is most suitable for your specific use.
Freeze-dried powder is highly hygroscopic — it absorbs moisture from the surrounding air very readily, which causes clumping and colour degradation. Proper storage is essential. Before opening: store in a sealed container below 23°C in a dark location — the sealed packaging provides adequate protection. After opening: transfer immediately to a sealed airtight container and minimise air exposure each time you access the product — take out what you need and reseal immediately. Do not store in a humid environment, near a sink, or in a location with significant temperature fluctuation. Consider adding a food-safe silica gel desiccant sachet to the storage container to absorb any residual moisture. When stored correctly, shelf life is 2+ years. If the powder has clumped, it can often be broken up with gentle pressure — clumping alone does not indicate spoilage, but off-odour or colour change does.
The standard sizes listed — 250g, 500g, 1kg, and 5kg — are our regular stocked wholesale pack sizes, but The Herbal Connection is a wholesale supplier and can accommodate bulk orders well beyond these standard sizes. Whether you are a food manufacturer, beverage producer, supplement brand, health food retailer, or large-scale buyer with ongoing volume requirements, we can discuss pricing and supply arrangements. Contact our wholesale team at sales@herbalconnection.com.au to discuss your specific requirements and to request current batch CoA documentation.
