About

Our Organic Fenugreek Powder (*Trigonella foenum-graecum*) is a finely milled, yellowish-golden spice that bridges the gap between the kitchen and the apothecary. Known as 'Methi' in Indian cuisine, it is famous for its complex flavour profile: a distinctive, sweet aroma reminiscent of maple syrup and burnt sugar, paired with a warming, slightly bitter taste. Beyond its role as a foundational curry spice, Fenugreek is globally revered in traditional herbalism to support healthy lactation in nursing mothers, aid digestion, and serve as a nutrient-rich base for Ayurvedic hair masks.

As always, it's advisable to consult with healthcare professionals for personalised guidance on health concerns.

Directions of Use

Fenugreek powder is highly concentrated. A little goes a long way, whether you are cooking, brewing, or mixing a beauty paste.

1. Culinary (Curries & Spice Blends): Add 1/4 to 1/2 a teaspoon to curries, dhal, or dry rubs. Toasting it lightly in a dry pan or hot oil helps mellow its natural bitterness and enhances its maple sweetness.

2. Lactation Support (Teas & Smoothies): Whisk 1/2 teaspoon into warm milk (or a dairy-free alternative), smoothies, or oatmeal. Its maple aroma pairs beautifully with cinnamon and honey.

3. Ayurvedic Hair Mask: Mix 2 tablespoons of powder with water, yoghurt, or aloe vera gel to form a slippery paste. Apply to the scalp and hair roots, leave for 30 minutes, and rinse well to promote conditioning and scalp health.

4. Digestive Tonic: Mix a quarter teaspoon in warm water and drink before meals to gently stimulate digestion and support healthy blood sugar levels.

Why does it smell like maple syrup?

Fenugreek contains a chemical compound called sotolon. In high concentrations, sotolon smells remarkably like maple syrup and burnt sugar. In fact, fenugreek extract is often used to flavour commercial imitation maple syrups!

Does it really help with milk supply?

Yes, it is one of the most famous herbal galactagogues (milk-boosters). Many nursing mothers report an increase in milk production within 24 to 72 hours of consuming it. It is commonly added to lactation cookies and teas.

Can I use the powder for hair growth?

Absolutely. In Ayurvedic traditions, fenugreek powder is mixed with water to create a hair mask. It is rich in mucilage (providing 'slip' for detangling) and proteins that are believed to strengthen the hair shaft and soothe the scalp.

Is Fenugreek bitter?

Raw fenugreek does have a bitter note, which is why it is used sparingly. To reduce the bitterness and enhance the sweet, nutty maple flavour, it is often lightly toasted in a dry pan or bloomed in hot oil before adding other ingredients.

Are there any side effects?

In large amounts, fenugreek can cause your sweat and urine to smell like maple syrup! It may also lower blood sugar, so diabetics on medication should consult a doctor. It should be avoided in medicinal doses during pregnancy.

Powder vs. Whole Seeds: Which is better?

Both are excellent, but powder is far more convenient. Whole seeds are incredibly hard and require soaking or a powerful spice grinder to break down. The fine powder dissolves easily into smoothies, curries, and DIY beauty pastes.
