Burdock Root — Arctium lappa, China

Burdock Root (Arctium lappa) — cut and sieved dried root sourced from China. Arctium lappa is a large biennial herb widespread across Europe, Asia, and North America, grown commercially for both its edible root and its use in botanical tea and herbal product manufacturing. The plant is perhaps best known for its burrs — the prickly seed heads that inspired the invention of Velcro — but it is the long, starchy taproot, harvested in the first year of growth, that is the commercially important part. Known as Gobo in Japanese cuisine, where it is a popular and widely consumed vegetable eaten raw, cooked, and pickled.

The dried root has a pleasantly earthy flavour with a mild, slightly sweet undertone — one of the more palatable roots in the herbal tea range, which makes it a useful primary or supporting ingredient in herbal root tea blends. It is commonly paired with Dandelion Root, which shares a similarly earthy, roasted character, and the two are a classic pairing in root tea formulations. The high natural inulin content of burdock root gives it a characteristic slightly sticky texture when hydrated and a naturally sweet background note. Cut and sieved to tea-grade specification. Freeze-treated. This product is sold as a food only. Organic grade available separately at /burdock-root-organic/.

Burdock Root — FAQs

Everything you need to know before you order.

Burdock Root is the dried taproot of Arctium lappa, a large biennial herb found across Europe, Asia, and North America. The root is harvested in the first year of the plant's growth, when it is at its most tender and starchy. Known as Gobo in Japanese cuisine, it is a popular vegetable widely eaten across East Asia. The dried root has a pleasantly earthy, mildly sweet flavour — one of the more palatable roots in herbal tea applications. The high natural inulin (prebiotic fibre) content gives it a characteristic slightly sweet background note and, when hydrated, a slightly viscous quality in the brew. Brewed as a decoction (simmered rather than steeped), it produces a warm, earthy, amber-coloured liquor.
Because burdock is a woody root rather than a leaf or flower, it benefits from a decoction method rather than a simple steep. Add 1–2 teaspoons of the cut root to 2 cups of cold water, bring to a simmer, and maintain a gentle simmer for 15–20 minutes covered. Strain and serve. This longer extraction releases more of the root's flavour compounds and the naturally sweet inulin content. For a blend application, burdock root pairs particularly well with dandelion root, which shares a similarly earthy character — the two together make a classic, balanced root tea with a pleasantly roasted quality.
