Yerba Mate Organic Tea Bags — FAQs

Everything you need to know before you order.

Yerba Mate (Ilex paraguariensis) is a species of holly native to the subtropical rainforests of South America — principally Paraguay, Argentina, southern Brazil, and Uruguay. Its leaves have been consumed as a caffeinated infusion by the Indigenous Guaraní people for centuries. The ritual of preparing and sharing mate — drinking from a gourd through a metal straw called a bombilla — is a profound cultural tradition across the Southern Cone of South America and is associated with friendship, hospitality, and community. Today it is one of the most widely consumed caffeinated beverages in the world, with a global following extending well beyond South America.
Green yerba mate has a bold, earthy, grassy character — often compared in profile to a robust green tea, but more vegetal and with a distinct herbal bitterness. It has a fresh, slightly smoky aroma and a full-bodied, tannic structure. The flavour is assertive and characteristic — quite different from floral or fruity teas. It is typically enjoyed as brewed or with a small amount of sweetener. For a smoother, mellower option, the Roasted Yerba Mate (tostado) version is also available.
Yes — Yerba Mate naturally contains caffeine, along with theobromine and theophylline — two related xanthine alkaloids also found in cacao and black tea respectively. The combination of these three compounds is considered by many to produce a distinctive stimulant effect that is more sustained and less abrupt than coffee. Caffeine levels per cup will vary with steep time and water temperature.
Place one pyramid bag (2g) in your cup. Use water at 65–75°C — not fully boiling, as high heat can increase bitterness. Steep for 3–5 minutes to taste. Green yerba mate benefits from a slightly shorter steep than the roasted variety. Each bag can typically be re-infused once with good results, though the second infusion will be lighter. Enjoy black or with a small amount of sweetener. For traditional preparation, use a gourd and bombilla if available.
Yes — the pyramid bags are made from soilon, a food-grade biodegradable material derived from corn starch (PLA). They are compostable and break down in industrial composting environments, in line with The Herbal Connection's commitment to sustainable packaging across the tea bag range.
