About

Our Sloe Berries, also known as Blackthorn (Prunus spinosa), are the dark purple fruit of the thorny hedgerow. They are a countryside classic, sought after in autumn to make warming sloe gin, wine, or jam. The berries have a very tart, astringent taste when raw and are intended for infusions.

As always, it's advisable to consult with healthcare professionals for personalised guidance on health concerns.

Directions of Use

The most popular use for sloe berries is making Sloe Gin.

1. Rinse the dried sloe berries. You do not need to prick them as the drying process has already split the skins.

2. Fill a clean, airtight glass jar about halfway with the sloe berries.

3. Add sugar (a good starting point is 100-150g sugar per 500g of berries) and fill the jar with a good quality gin.

4. Seal and store in a cool, dark place for 2-3 months, shaking the jar every few days for the first two weeks.

5. Strain the deep red gin through a muslin cloth into a clean bottle. The berries can also be used for jams.

What are Sloe Berries?

Sloe berries are the dark purple, cherry-sized fruit of the Blackthorn bush (Prunus spinosa). They are famous in Europe, especially the UK, for making Sloe Gin.

Blackthorn icon

Are Sloe Berries the same as Blackthorn Berries?

Yes, they are the same thing. 'Sloe' is the common name for the berry, and 'Blackthorn' is the name of the thorny bush or tree that it grows on.

Flavour icon

What do Sloe Berries taste like?

Raw sloe berries are not for eating! They are incredibly sharp, tart, and astringent (making your mouth pucker). However, when steeped in gin with sugar or cooked into a jam, they release a beautiful, rich, fruity, and plum-like flavour with a hint of almond.

Usage icon

What are Sloe Berries used for?

Their number one use is for making Sloe Gin. They are also used to make sloe wine, sloe & apple jelly, sloe jam, and in some traditional fruit syrups.

Harvest icon

When do you pick sloe berries?

Traditionally, sloes are picked in autumn, after the first frost. The frost is believed to help split the tough skins and soften the fruit. Since our sloe berries are dried, they are ready to use immediately.

Safety icon

Are sloe berries poisonous?

The flesh of the fruit is perfectly safe to use for gin, wine, and jam. However, like the pips of cherries and apples, the small stone (seed) inside the sloe berry contains cyanogenic glycosides. The seeds should not be crushed or consumed.
