Reishi Mushroom Powder — FAQs

Everything you need to know before you order.

Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum) — known in Chinese as Lingzhi ("spirit mushroom") and in Japanese as Mannentake ("ten-thousand year mushroom") — is a bracket fungus that grows on decaying hardwood trees across Asia, Europe, and North America. It has one of the longest documented histories of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine, appearing in the Shennong Ben Cao Jing (the earliest known Chinese pharmacopoeia, compiled around 200 AD) where it is classified in the highest category of herbs — those associated with long life, vitality, and supporting the heart and mind. For over two millennia it has been among the most revered fungi in both Chinese and Japanese medicinal traditions.
Reishi is notable for its concentration of several classes of bioactive compounds. Polysaccharides — particularly beta-glucans — are complex carbohydrates found throughout the fungal cell wall and are the primary focus of modern research into functional mushrooms. Triterpenes — including ganoderic acids unique to Ganoderma — give reishi its characteristic bitter flavour and are the subject of significant pharmacological interest. Reishi also contains sterols, proteins, and various minerals. The balance and concentration of these compounds varies with growing conditions, substrate, and processing method.
Reishi powder has a distinctly bitter, woody, and earthy flavour — it is not pleasant consumed on its own in water. In practice, it is almost always blended with other ingredients that mask or complement its bitterness: strongly flavoured beverages like coffee, cacao, or chai; blended into smoothies with fruit; incorporated into latte mixes with other functional mushrooms; or used in food manufacturing where the bitterness is absorbed into the overall flavour profile. A small amount — typically 1–2 teaspoons per serving — goes a long way.
This is a whole mushroom powder — the dried fruiting body of Ganoderma lucidum ground to a fine powder — not a standardised extract. Extracts (typically labelled with a ratio such as "10:1" or a percentage of beta-glucans) involve an additional hot water or dual extraction step that concentrates specific compounds, and are typically sold at significantly higher price points and in smaller quantities. Whole mushroom powder retains the full spectrum of naturally occurring compounds in their native ratios and is the format most commonly used in food manufacturing, blending, and large-volume functional ingredient applications.
Both products are 100% Ganoderma lucidum whole mushroom powder from China. The key difference is certification — this product is commercially farmed but not certified organic; the Reishi Mushroom Powder Organic carries a formal organic certification. For buyers whose own products or customers require organic credentials, the organic version is the appropriate choice. For high-volume food manufacturing or supplement blending where organic certification is not required, this product offers equivalent botanical quality at a lower price point.
Reishi Mushroom Powder is available in 250g, 500g, 1kg, and 5kg bulk packs. The 5kg is bulk packed, not individual units. For larger volumes or ongoing supply arrangements, please contact our office directly. We ship Australia-wide from our Gold Coast warehouse.
