Rosa centifolia

Origin: India

Rose petals are traditionally known for their heavenly aroma. Metaphorically the rose is related to the emotion love, and traditionally the most predominant flower symbol in the world, symbolising; love, youth and beauty. Rose gallica is a species of rose native to the Mediterranean, fragrant by nature; it is one of the three varieties of rose used for rose oil production. Historically the name Rosa comes from the Greek word, rodon, meaning red. Greek history suggests that the deep red colour of the rose stems from the blood of Adonis and according to Islam history, the rose originated from the sweat of Mohammed. Both are very different stories but both carry a very important sacred meaning. The traditional and contemporary uses of rose are almost the same. It has been mainly used for its fragrance component and its soothing effect. It has been known to help alleviate headaches and is a popular flavouring agent in many Mediterranean dishes.

Certified Organic Red Rose Petals — Rosa centifolia

Certified Organic Red Rose Petals (Rosa centifolia) — whole dried petals from the Cabbage Rose, one of the most fragrant and historically significant of all rose varieties, sourced from certified organic farms in India. Rosa centifolia — also known as the hundred-petalled rose or Rose de Mai — is a complex garden hybrid prized above all other rose varieties for the richness and depth of its fragrance, and has been cultivated for rose oil and dried petal production in the Mediterranean and South Asia for centuries. The dried petals retain the deep crimson colour and the characteristic sweet, deep, slightly spicy rose fragrance that has made this species the most widely used in culinary, tea, and fragrance applications globally.

Certified organic. No known allergens. Naturally caffeine-free. Available in 250g, 500g, and 5kg bulk. Suitable for tea blends, culinary applications, confectionery, edible decoration, and cosmetic/fragrance product development. Organic Red Rose Petals — FAQs

Everything you need to know before you order.

Rosa centifolia — the cabbage rose or hundred-petalled rose — is a complex hybrid rose developed in the Netherlands in the 17th century that has since become the dominant variety used for dried petal production, rose oil (rose absolute), and culinary rose applications globally. It is one of only a handful of rose varieties with a fragrance rich and complex enough to be commercially significant — most modern hybrid tea roses, while visually striking, have little usable aroma. The name centifolia (hundred-petalled) refers to the densely packed, layered petal structure that makes each flower extraordinarily fragrant. India — particularly the Rajasthan region around Pushkar — has become a major production centre for both fresh rose cultivation and the dried petal processing used to produce the culinary and tea-grade dried petals supplied here.
Rose petals are primarily used in tea applications as a visual and aromatic ingredient rather than a primary flavour carrier — the petals add fragrance, colour, and a delicate floral quality to blends but are mild enough to complement rather than overwhelm other ingredients. Tea blending: add to black tea, green tea, hibiscus, chamomile, and herbal blends for visual appeal and soft floral character. The crimson petals retain colour well in the bag and brew to a soft pink. Rose tea: steep 1–2 teaspoons of petals alone in hot water for a simple, fragrant rose infusion — mild in flavour, warming and aromatic. Beverages: use in rose lemonade, sparkling water, and cocktails; infuse into simple syrups for flavouring.
Confectionery and baking: press onto the surface of chocolates, cookies, cakes, and macarons as edible decoration; fold into Turkish delight and marshmallow; use in rose water production by infusing petals into water; incorporate into shortbread and floral biscuits. Middle Eastern and South Asian cuisine: a traditional ingredient in biryani, rice dishes, and spice blends (particularly in Moroccan ras el hanout); use in rose syrup (sharbat) and rose milk. Desserts: scatter over panna cotta, ice cream, and yoghurt bowls; use as garnish on tarts and cheesecakes. Savoury: a component of some Persian stews and tagines alongside citrus peel and saffron. The flavour is delicate — the petals are primarily used for aroma, colour, and visual appeal, with the flavour as a subtle secondary element.
Yes — dried Rosa centifolia petals are widely used in natural cosmetic and fragrance product development, including bath and body products, potpourri, sachets, and natural perfumery. The certified organic status of this product makes it appropriate for use in certified organic cosmetic formulations where ingredient certification is required. Applications include botanical bath soaks and salts, facial steam blends, rose petal-infused oils and waters, and decorative inclusion in handmade soaps and bath bombs. The deep crimson colour holds well in dry applications and the fragrance — while less intense than fresh petals or rose oil — provides a recognisable and authentic rose character.
The HC range includes several rose petal products to suit different applications. Organic Red Rose Petals (this product) — whole dried petals for tea blending, culinary use, and visual applications. Organic Red Rose Petal Powder — finely milled from the same organic petals, for applications requiring a fine, dispersible powder (icing, confectionery coatings, flavouring). Conventional Red Rose Petals — non-organic whole petals at a lower price point for applications where certified organic status is not required. Conventional Red Rose Petal Powder — freshly milled non-organic powder. Contact our office for current availability and pricing on all formats.
