Wuyi Oolong is a special category of oolong tea from the Wuyi Mountains in Fujian, China. It is also known as 'Yancha' or 'rock tea' because it grows on rocky cliffs, which imparts a unique mineral taste known as 'yan yun' or 'rock rhyme' into the tea.
It has a complex, rich flavour profile. Expect deep roasted notes, hints of dark chocolate, stone fruits like plum, and a signature long-lasting mineral finish. It's smoother and less astringent than many other teas, with a warming, full-bodied character.
Wuyi Oolong contains a moderate amount of caffeine, typically more than green tea but less than black tea or coffee. A cup may have between 30-60mg of caffeine, but the exact amount varies based on brewing time and temperature.
The main differences are its terroir and processing. Wuyi oolongs are typically more heavily oxidised and charcoal-roasted, giving them a darker colour and a roasted, mineral flavour. In contrast, greener oolongs, like Tie Guan Yin, are lighter and more floral.
Da Hong Pao, or 'Big Red Robe,' is the most famous and historically significant type of Wuyi rock tea. While our tea is a classic Wuyi Oolong from the same region, Da Hong Pao refers to a specific, legendary cultivar within the broader rock tea family.
Absolutely! High-quality Wuyi Oolong is prized for its ability to be steeped multiple times. Each infusion will reveal a slightly different layer of its complex flavour. It's not uncommon to get 4-6 enjoyable infusions from the same set of leaves.
