Certified Organic Orange Peel — Citrus sinensis, Cut Pieces

Certified Organic Orange Peel (Citrus sinensis) — the dried outer peel of the sweet orange, cut into pieces and sourced from certified organic production across India, Albania, and Germany. Orange peel is one of the most versatile and widely used dried citrus botanicals in food, tea, and distillery applications — the outer zest layer of the orange contains a high concentration of aromatic essential oils (predominantly d-limonene) responsible for the bright, vivid, immediately recognisable sweet orange character that differs markedly from the flat, dull character of orange flavouring. Certified organic orange peel is essential for applications where the peel is directly consumed or infused without the buffer of conventional fruit's typical pesticide residues on the outer skin.

The cut peel pieces have a vibrant orange aroma and flavour with characteristic sweet citrus character and a pleasant mild bitterness from the white pith retained beneath the zest. This mild bitterness is desirable in many applications — it is the same pleasant citrus bitterness that underpins marmalade, orange bitters, and the citrus backbone of gin and amaro. Certified organic. Naturally caffeine-free. Available in 250g, 500g, 1kg, and 5kg bulk. This product is sold as a food only.

Certified Organic Orange Peel — FAQs

Everything you need to know before you order.

Orange peel is one of the botanical ingredients where certified organic status matters most. Conventionally grown oranges are typically treated with post-harvest fungicides (particularly imazalil, thiabendazole, and orthophenylphenol) applied directly to the outer skin to prevent mould during storage and transport — residues of these treatments concentrate on the peel. When you consume or infuse the flesh of a conventional orange, you generally peel and discard the treated outer skin; but when the peel itself is the ingredient being steeped, baked with, infused into spirits, or incorporated directly into food, those residues come with it. Certified organic orange peel is grown and processed without these post-harvest treatments, making it the appropriate choice for any application where the peel is the edible or infused ingredient.
Orange peel is one of the most popular and universally appealing citrus inclusions in herbal tea blends — it adds brightness, warmth, and natural sweetness to any blend. Classic pairings include: Chai blends — orange peel adds a warm citrus lift alongside cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, and clove; Hibiscus blends — orange and hibiscus is a natural combination, the sweetness of the peel balancing hibiscus's tartness; Rosehip blends — a classic fruit tea combination (orange, rosehip, apple) for warm and iced applications; Ginger blends — orange zest brightens and lifts ginger's warming character; Rooibos blends — sweet orange is a natural partner for rooibos's natural vanilla-caramel sweetness; Black and green tea bases — orange peel is a classic addition to breakfast tea blends. Use at 10–20% by weight in most blends.
Baking: orange peel is a classic flavouring in cakes, biscuits, panettone, stollen, hot cross buns, and shortbread — steep cut pieces in warm liquid first to soften and intensify, or use a food processor to grind finely before incorporating. It pairs naturally with chocolate (the classic combination), almond, vanilla, and warm spices. Sauces and marinades: add cut pieces to braising liquids for duck, pork, and beef; include in BBQ sauces, teriyaki glazes, and citrus-forward marinades. Stews and braises: a classic French technique (daube, cassoulet) uses dried orange peel in slow-cooked meat dishes for background citrus depth. Infused oils and vinegars: steep in olive oil, coconut oil, or white wine vinegar for flavoured condiments. Mulled beverages: add to mulled wine, spiced cider, and mulled fruit punch along with cinnamon, cloves, and star anise.
Orange peel is one of the most widely used botanicals in the distillery industry, appearing in gin, amaro (Italian bitter liqueur), Triple Sec and Curaçao-style orange liqueurs, vermouth, and cocktail bitters. In gin distillation: orange peel (both sweet and bitter varieties) is a near-universal inclusion in gin botanical baskets — it contributes a bright, warm citrus note that complements juniper beautifully and adds aromatic complexity. Certified organic peel is essential for producers making organic-labelled spirits. In amaro and bitters: the mild bitterness of the white pith adds to the botanical bitterness profile alongside gentian, wormwood, and other bitters. In cold compounding and infusion: macerate in high-proof neutral spirit for 24–72 hours for a citrus-forward orange extract for use in spirits blending and cocktail production.
