About

Our St. Mary's Thistle Seeds, also known as Milk Thistle (Silybum marianum), are the whole, dried fruits of the striking purple thistle. These hard, dark seeds are prized in traditional European herbalism and are famously associated with liver health. They contain the active compound complex, Silymarin.

As always, it's advisable to consult with healthcare professionals for personalised guidance on health concerns.

Directions of Use

The seeds are very hard; they must be ground to be used effectively.

1. Using a coffee or spice grinder, grind the whole seeds into a coarse or fine powder.

2. As a tea: Add 1-2 teaspoons of the ground powder to a cup of hot water. Steep for 10-15 minutes, then strain through a fine filter (like a paper filter or muslin cloth).

3. In smoothies: Add 1 teaspoon of the ground powder directly into your daily smoothie.

4. The powder can also be encapsulated or sprinkled over muesli or yoghurt.

5. Safety: Do not use if you have an allergy to the Asteraceae (daisy/ragweed) family.

What is St. Mary's Thistle (Milk Thistle) traditionally used for?

In traditional European herbalism, Milk Thistle has been used for centuries as a 'liver tonic' to support liver health and aid digestion. Its properties are linked to a compound complex called Silymarin. This product is sold as a food-grade herb only.

Grinding icon

How do you use the whole seeds?

The whole seeds are extremely hard and must be ground into a powder before use. A simple tea infusion is not effective. Once ground, the powder can be steeped in hot water to make a tea, or added to smoothies, muesli, or juices.

Can I just eat the whole seeds?

You can, but it is not recommended. The seeds are very tough, and your body cannot break them down to access the beneficial compounds. You must grind them in a coffee or spice grinder first.

Science icon

What is Silymarin?

Silymarin is not a single substance, but a group of active compounds (flavonolignans) found inside the milk thistle seed. It is the component most studied and associated with the herb's traditional use.

Who should not take St. Mary's Thistle?

You should not take it if you have an allergy to the Asteraceae (daisy) family, which includes ragweed, chamomile, and marigolds. As it can affect the liver and hormones, consult a healthcare professional before use if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or on any medication.
