About
Marshmallow Root is the dried, cut root of Althaea officinalis, grown in Poland. The root is naturally rich in mucilage, a soft, gel-like plant fibre, and has a long history of use in traditional herbal practice. Our cut root pieces are cream to light tan with a mild, earthy, slightly sweet flavour, and are popular for herbal teas, cold infusions and blending. Supplied in retail sizes for home use and in bulk for naturopaths, food manufacturers and health retailers.
As always, it's advisable to consult with healthcare professionals for personalised guidance on health concerns.

Marshmallow Root — FAQs
Common questions about our cut marshmallow root from Poland.
Buy dried, cut marshmallow root (Althaea officinalis) in Australia, in retail sizes and bulk for wholesale.
What is marshmallow root?
Marshmallow root is the root of the Althaea officinalis plant, a perennial herb. It is rich in mucilage, which turns slippery and gel-like when soaked in water, and it has a long history of traditional herbal use. It is the plant the original marshmallow confection was named after, but this product is simply the dried, cut root, not a lolly.

How do I make marshmallow root tea or a cold infusion?
As a general guide, add 1–2 teaspoons of cut root to a cup of cold water and steep, covered, for several hours or overnight, then strain. For a warm tea, use warm (not boiling) water and steep for 10–15 minutes. Cold water draws out the most mucilage, which is why many people prefer a cold infusion.
What does marshmallow root taste like?
Mild, earthy and slightly sweet, with a soft, smooth mouthfeel from the mucilage. It blends easily with other herbs, such as licorice root or fennel, and doesn't overpower them.
What is marshmallow root traditionally used for?
In traditional herbal practice, marshmallow root has been used as a soothing, mucilage-rich herb, commonly for the digestive system and throat. Many people enjoy it as a herbal tea or blended into their own mixes. It is sold as a food only, and we make no therapeutic claims. For personalised guidance on health concerns, speak to a healthcare professional.
Should I choose the cut root or the powder?
This page is the cut root, which suits steeping, teas and cold infusions and is strained out afterwards. If you would rather stir it into a drink or use it in recipes, see our
Marshmallow Root Powder.
Is marshmallow root safe? Who should check first?
Marshmallow root is a food herb, but it is not suitable for everyone. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, taking medication, or managing a health condition, check with your doctor, pharmacist or other healthcare professional first. Some sources suggest taking other medicines at a different time to marshmallow root, so ask your pharmacist. Keep it away from dogs and cats, and ask a vet if you have questions about pets.
