About

Our Organic Marshmallow Root Powder (*Althaea officinalis*) is a soothing, beige-coloured powder derived from the dried roots of the marshmallow plant. Unlike the sugary confection it inspired, this root is a powerful "demulcent"—meaning it is rich in mucilage, a gel-like substance that coats and soothes mucous membranes. It is traditionally used to support digestive health, soothe sore throats, and hydrate dry skin and hair.

As always, it's advisable to consult with healthcare professionals for personalised guidance on health concerns.

Directions of Use

Marshmallow Root works best when exposed to cool water (Cold Infusion) rather than boiling water, which can break down the delicate mucilage.

1. Cold Infusion (For Drinking): Mix 1 tablespoon of powder into a jar of cool water. Let it sit for 4 hours or overnight (it will thicken). Strain and drink to soothe the throat and gut.

2. Smoothie Booster: Add 1 teaspoon to smoothies for a thick, creamy texture and a gut-healing boost.

3. DIY Hair Mask: Mix with water or aloe vera gel to create a "slip" paste. Apply to hair as a natural detangler and hydrator.

4. Skin Paste: Mix a small amount with water to form a paste and apply to dry or irritated skin.

Gut Health icon

What is Marshmallow Root Powder used for?

It is primarily used as a soothing agent. It is rich in mucilage, which creates a protective coating for the stomach lining, throat, and skin. It is popular for digestive support (like acid reflux) and skincare.

Preparation icon

How should I prepare it?

For the best therapeutic effect, use a "Cold Infusion." Mix the powder with room temperature water and let it sit for a few hours. Boiling water can break down the soothing mucilage.

Taste icon

Does it taste like marshmallows?

Not exactly. The white fluffy candy was originally made from this plant, but the root itself has a mild, earthy, slightly sweet and woody taste. It is not sugary.

Texture icon

Why does it thicken water?

This is the "mucilage" at work. Marshmallow root contains polysaccharides that swell when mixed with water, creating a gel-like consistency. This "slippery" texture is exactly what makes it effective for soothing irritation.

Hair care icon

Is it good for hair?

Yes! It is a favorite in the curly hair community. When mixed with water, it creates a slippery gel that acts as a natural detangler and leave-in conditioner, providing hydration and slip.

Medication safety icon

Can I take it with medication?

Because Marshmallow Root coats the stomach, it may slow down the absorption of other oral medications. It is generally recommended to take it at least 1 hour before or after other medications.
