About

Our whole Organic Flaxseeds, also known as linseeds, are tiny powerhouses of nutrition. Kept whole to preserve their freshness and prevent oxidation, they have a mild, nutty flavour. For best nutritional absorption, the seeds should be ground before use.

As always, it's advisable to consult with healthcare professionals for personalised guidance on health concerns.

Directions of Use

1. For optimal nutrition, grind the whole flaxseeds in a coffee grinder, spice mill, or high-powered blender just before use.

2. Sprinkle 1-2 tablespoons of ground flaxseed over porridge, yoghurt, or breakfast cereals.

3. Add the ground meal to smoothies or protein shakes for a boost of fibre and healthy fats.

4. To make a 'flax egg' for vegan baking, mix 1 tablespoon of ground flaxseed with 3 tablespoons of water and let it sit for 5-10 minutes to thicken.

5. Store whole flaxseeds in a cool, dark place. Once ground, store the meal in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week.

Flaxseeds Whole (Linseeds) — Certified Organic, Australian Origin

Certified Organic Whole Flaxseeds (Linum usitatissimum) — also known as linseeds, sourced from Australian growers. Linum usitatissimum is one of the oldest cultivated plants, grown for both its fibre (from the stem, used for linen) and its oil-bearing seeds. Australia is a significant global flaxseed producer, particularly in southern Queensland, New South Wales, and Victoria. Flaxseeds come in two main colour varieties — brown and golden (also called yellow) — both are the same species and have essentially identical composition; the golden variety has a slightly milder, less earthy flavour. These are whole seeds, kept intact to preserve freshness: the outer hull (testa) of the whole seed acts as a natural protective barrier that shields the delicate polyunsaturated fatty acids inside from oxidation, giving whole flaxseeds a significantly longer shelf life than pre-ground meal.

Whole flaxseeds have a mild, nutty, and very slightly earthy flavour. Their primary culinary roles are as a visible seed inclusion in bread, crackers, and muesli; as a vegan egg substitute when ground and hydrated (the "flax egg"); and as a source of dietary fibre in baked goods and functional food formulations. For applications where the nutritional content of the seed interior is relevant, grinding just before use is recommended — the whole seed hull is hard enough that it passes through the digestive system largely intact without grinding. ⚠ May contain gluten, wheat and soy due to farming and handling practices. Certified organic. Available in 250g, 500g, 1kg, and 5kg bulk. This product is sold as a food only.

Flaxseeds Whole — FAQs

Everything you need to know before you order.

For most eating and nutritional applications, yes — grinding before use is recommended. The hard outer hull of the whole seed is difficult for the digestive system to break down, meaning the seed interior can pass through largely intact without releasing its content. Grinding to a fine meal just before use gives access to the seed's interior. For applications where the whole seed is used purely for texture or visual effect — scattered over bread, crackers, or in muesli — grinding is not necessary, as the seed is consumed for its physical presence rather than its interior. For baking applications using the "flax egg" technique, the seed must be ground first.
The whole seed's outer hull acts as a natural protective barrier that shields the seed's interior from oxidation. Once ground, the high polyunsaturated fat content is exposed to air and begins oxidising — ground flaxseed meal goes rancid much faster than whole seeds and should be used within one to two weeks of grinding, stored in the refrigerator. Whole flaxseeds stored correctly have a shelf life of up to 24 months. For buyers who grind as needed, buying whole is simply more practical and economical at scale. The related product Flaxseed (Linseed) Meal is also available for buyers who prefer ready-to-use pre-ground meal.
Home use: a coffee grinder, spice mill, or high-powered blender (particularly compact "bullet"-style blenders) works well — grind in short bursts until you have a fine meal. Only grind what you need for one to two days at a time; store any unused ground meal in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Commercial use: a high-speed hammer mill, pin mill, or roller mill is used for commercial grinding. The high oil content of flaxseeds means they can heat up during milling — some producers use temperature-controlled milling to prevent fat degradation. Grind to the particle size required for your application — finer for smoothie additions and baking; coarser for muesli inclusions.
A flax egg is a plant-based binder used as an egg substitute in vegan baking. To make one: grind 1 tablespoon of whole flaxseeds to a fine meal, then mix with 3 tablespoons of cold water. Stir to combine and let sit for 5–10 minutes until the mixture thickens to a gel-like consistency. This gel forms because flaxseed mucilage (a soluble fibre) absorbs water and swells, creating a viscous, binding texture similar to egg white. One flax egg replaces approximately one medium chicken egg in recipes where the egg's primary function is binding — muffins, quick breads, pancakes, and dense cookies. It does not replicate the leavening or structural setting properties of egg in aerated cakes and soufflés. Pre-ground flaxseed meal can also be used directly, eliminating the grinding step.
Whole flaxseeds: store in a sealed, airtight container below 23°C in a cool, dark, dry location — pantry storage is suitable. Shelf life is up to 24 months under correct storage conditions. The intact hull provides substantial protection against oxidation, making whole seeds much more stable than ground meal. Ground flaxseed meal: once ground, the oils are exposed to air and oxidise rapidly. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator and use within one to two weeks. The tell-tale sign of rancid ground flaxseed is a bitter, sharp, paint-like off-odour — if you detect this, discard and grind fresh. For this reason, grinding in small batches as needed is strongly preferable to grinding large quantities at once.
The standard sizes listed — 250g, 500g, 1kg, and 5kg — are our regular stocked wholesale pack sizes, but The Herbal Connection is a wholesale supplier and can accommodate bulk orders well beyond these standard sizes. Whether you are a bakery, muesli or granola producer, functional food manufacturer, or large-scale buyer with ongoing requirements, we can discuss pricing and supply arrangements. The related product Flaxseed (Linseed) Meal is also available for buyers who need the pre-ground format.
