Echinacea Extract Powder 4:1 — Echinacea purpurea, China

Echinacea Extract Powder 4:1 (Echinacea purpurea) — a concentrated extract produced at a 4:1 ratio from dried Echinacea purpurea aerial herb. Four parts raw echinacea herb were used to produce one part of this finished extract powder. Echinacea purpurea (Purple Coneflower) is a flowering perennial in the Asteraceae family, native to eastern North America and now widely cultivated across China and Europe for the commercial botanical trade. It is one of the most commercially significant botanical herbs in Australian and global natural products markets, with long-standing consumer recognition and a well-established presence in the supplement, functional food, and herbal tea sectors.

At the 4:1 concentration ratio, the alkylamide compounds characteristic of echinacea — responsible for the distinctive mild tongue-tingling sensation — are concentrated alongside other water-soluble plant constituents. This characteristic tingling is a recognised quality indicator for genuine echinacea material. The extract is used in capsule and tablet manufacturing, supplement product formulation, functional food applications, and private label product development where a concentrated, consistent echinacea ingredient is required at a smaller inclusion volume than raw herb powder. This product is sold as a food ingredient only. Raw echinacea herb (conventional and organic, whole herb and root grades) are also available separately.

Echinacea Extract Powder 4:1 — FAQs

Everything you need to know before you order.

Raw echinacea herb is the whole dried aerial plant — leaves, stems, and flower parts — cut and sieved or ground to a powder. The 4:1 extract has had the water-soluble compounds extracted at a 4:1 concentration and spray-dried. The extract is approximately 4x more concentrated per unit weight than raw herb powder. For capsule manufacturing where a meaningful echinacea inclusion at standard capsule fill weights is needed, the extract is the appropriate choice. For tea blending and food applications where the whole herb flavour profile is required, the raw herb is more appropriate. Both formats are available from The Herbal Connection.
The mild tingling or buzzing sensation on the tongue when tasting echinacea is caused by naturally occurring compounds called alkylamides, which are specific to the Echinacea genus. Because alkylamides are not present in most common adulterant plants, their presence is a reliable indicator of genuine echinacea material. A stronger tingling generally indicates higher alkylamide content. An echinacea sample with no tingling at all is worth questioning.
Yes — the 4:1 extract format is well suited to capsule and tablet manufacturing. At 4x concentration, a standard 500mg–1000mg vegetable capsule fill weight can deliver a meaningful echinacea equivalent per capsule that would not be achievable at the same fill weight using raw herb powder. Contact us at sales@herbalconnection.com.au with your capsule fill weight and target inclusion to confirm suitability and request specification documentation.
