Dandelion Root — Taraxacum officinale

Dandelion Root (Taraxacum officinale) — unroasted, cut and sieved dried root from Germany. The common dandelion is one of the most widespread plants on Earth and one of the most historically used botanical food plants — consumed as a vegetable, brewed as a tea, and used as a coffee alternative across Europe and North America for centuries. While most Australians know it only as a garden weed, it has a long and serious culinary history. The entire plant is edible — leaves, flowers, and root — and in many European cultures the root has traditionally been roasted and brewed as a caffeine-free coffee substitute.

This unroasted grade is the raw, dried cut root — earthy, pleasantly bitter, and with a clean rooty flavour that is more subtle than the roasted version. It is the most versatile processing format for buyers who want to roast to their own specification, blend into root tea formulations, or use as a base for extractions. The high inulin (prebiotic fibre) content of dandelion root gives it a naturally slightly sweet undertone beneath the bitterness. It pairs exceptionally well with burdock root — the two together are a classic European root tea pairing. Freeze-treated. This product is sold as a food only. Organic grade available at /dandelion-root-organic/. Roasted grades also available.

Dandelion Root — FAQs

Everything you need to know before you order.

Unroasted dandelion root is the raw, dried taproot of Taraxacum officinale — cut, sieved, and dried without any roasting process. The flavour is earthy and pleasantly bitter with a naturally sweet undertone that comes from the root's high inulin (prebiotic fibre) content. Compared to the roasted version, it is cleaner and less intensely flavoured — the bitterness is present but not dominant. The unroasted grade is the most versatile format: it can be used as-is in root tea blends, roasted in-house to a custom degree, or used as a base for liquid extractions.
The roasting process dramatically changes the flavour profile of dandelion root. Unroasted (this product, HT.DRK1) — earthy, gently bitter, with a subtle sweetness; subtler and more versatile for blending; suitable for custom in-house roasting. Roasted (HT.DRRK1) — deep, rich, toasty, almost coffee-like; the Maillard reaction during roasting produces complex roasted flavour compounds; the classic format for dandelion "coffee" or caffeine-free coffee substitute blends. Roasted Organic (HTO.DRRK1) — the organic certified version of the roasted grade. If your application is a coffee alternative or "dandelion coffee" product, the roasted grade is the right choice. If you are blending into a root herb tea or want flexibility to process yourself, the unroasted grade gives you more control.
Dandelion root is a woody root and benefits from a decoction method rather than a simple steep. Add 1–2 teaspoons of cut root to 2 cups of cold water, bring to a gentle simmer, cover, and simmer for 15–20 minutes. Strain and serve. The longer extraction draws out more of the root's flavour and the naturally sweet inulin content. For the most coffee-like experience, use the roasted grade rather than this unroasted version. Dandelion root pairs classically with burdock root — the two together make a well-rounded, earthy root tea blend. Also works well with chicory root for a deeper, more bitter character.
