About

Our Organic Roasted Chicory Root (*Cichorium intybus*) is the premier caffeine-free coffee alternative. We source premium organic chicory roots, which are chopped and then roasted to perfection. This roasting process caramelises the natural sugars in the root, creating a dark, rich, and robust flavour profile with earthy, slightly bitter, and nutty undertones—remarkably similar to traditional coffee but without the caffeine or acidity. It's a beloved staple in New Orleans-style coffee blends and a powerhouse prebiotic for gut health.

As always, it's advisable to consult with healthcare professionals for personalised guidance on health concerns.

Directions of Use

Roasted Chicory Root granules can be brewed just like ground coffee. They yield a dark, full-bodied beverage.

1. The 100% Caffeine-Free Brew: Use 1-2 tablespoons of chicory granules per cup of water. Brew in a French Press, pour-over, or drip coffee maker for 5-7 minutes. Serve black or with your favourite milk and sweetener.

2. New Orleans Blend (Lower Caffeine): Mix roasted chicory with your regular ground coffee. A common ratio is 1 part chicory to 3 parts coffee. Brew as you normally would for a richer, smoother, and less caffeinated cup.

3. Cold Brew: Add 3/4 cup of chicory granules to a pitcher with 4 cups of cold water. Stir, cover, and refrigerate for 12-24 hours. Strain well and serve over ice, diluted with water or milk to taste.

4. Prebiotic Booster: The brewed liquid can be added to smoothies or used as a base for hot chocolate for a gut-health boost.

Taste icon

Does chicory root taste like coffee?

It's the closest natural alternative! Roasted chicory root has a dark, rich, earthy, and slightly bitter flavour profile that mimics the body and mouthfeel of coffee exceptionally well. It doesn't have the exact same aroma, but it provides a very satisfying, full-bodied brew.

Caffeine icon

Is chicory root completely caffeine-free?

Yes, it is 100% naturally caffeine-free. This makes it an excellent choice for those looking to reduce caffeine intake, for afternoon or evening drinking, or for anyone sensitive to stimulants.

Gut Health icon

What are the health benefits of chicory root?

The primary benefit comes from its high concentration of inulin, a type of soluble prebiotic fibre. Inulin feeds the good bacteria in your gut, supporting digestive health, regularity, and overall microbiome balance. It has also been traditionally used to support liver health.

Brewing icon

How do I brew it?

You can brew our roasted granules just like ground coffee. They work perfectly in a French press, pour-over, drip machine, or even a stovetop Moka pot. Use about 1-2 tablespoons per cup of water, adjusting to your preferred strength.

History icon

Why is it mixed with coffee in New Orleans?

Historically, during times of coffee shortage (like the Civil War), chicory was added to stretch out limited coffee supplies. It stuck because people loved the result! The chicory adds body, lowers the caffeine content, and mellows the acidity of the coffee, creating a smoother, richer cup.

Safety icon

Are there any side effects?

Chicory is generally safe for most people. However, because it is rich in fibre (inulin), consuming too much too quickly can cause some digestive discomfort like gas or bloating in sensitive individuals. Start with a smaller cup and see how your body reacts.
