Eschscholzia californica is a flowering annual or short-lived perennial in the Papaveraceae (poppy) family, native to the grasslands and chaparral of California and the Pacific Coast of North America, and now widely naturalised across Europe and the Mediterranean. It is the state flower of California, celebrated for its vivid orange and yellow blooms. Despite belonging to the same botanical family as the opium poppy (Papaver somniferum), Eschscholzia californica is a chemically and pharmacologically distinct plant — it does not contain opium alkaloids and is not a controlled substance.

No — Eschscholzia californica (California Poppy) and Papaver somniferum (Opium Poppy) are entirely different plants. They share the same broad botanical family (Papaveraceae) but are in different genera and are chemically and pharmacologically unrelated. The Opium Poppy (Papaver somniferum) is the source of opium alkaloids including morphine and codeine and is a controlled substance. Eschscholzia californica does not contain these alkaloids and is not a controlled substance in Australia. California Poppy contains a different set of isoquinoline alkaloids (californidine, eschscholtzine, and others) that are specific to the Eschscholzia genus and are not related to opium compounds. The California Poppy is a legal, food-grade botanical ingredient.

What does California Poppy tea taste like?
