What is Buckthorn Bark used for?

Buckthorn Bark (from the Alder Buckthorn tree) is traditionally used as a stimulant laxative to help relieve occasional constipation. It works by stimulating the muscles in the bowel to encourage movement.

Comparison icon

Is Buckthorn Bark the same as Sea Buckthorn?

No, absolutely not. Sea Buckthorn is a berry rich in Vitamin C and oils. Buckthorn Bark is a tree bark with potent laxative properties. They are completely different plants and should never be confused.

Aging icon

Why is Buckthorn Bark 'aged'?

Fresh Buckthorn bark contains anthrones, which can cause severe vomiting and cramping. The bark must be aged for at least a year to convert these into anthraquinones, which are safer and act as an effective laxative. Our bark is fully aged.

Brewing icon

How do you make Buckthorn Bark tea?

Because it is a woody bark, it needs to be decocted. Simmer 1 teaspoon of bark in a cup of water for 10-15 minutes, then strain. It is often drunk in the evening to produce an effect the next morning.

Safety icon

Who should NOT use Buckthorn Bark?

Do not use if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have an inflammatory bowel condition (like Crohn's, colitis, or appendicitis). Do not use for more than 7 days in a row to avoid dependency. Always consult a doctor.

Taste icon

What does Buckthorn Bark taste like?

The tea has a bitter, woody, and slightly astringent taste. It is not generally consumed for flavour. Many people blend it with aromatic herbs like ginger, fennel, or licorice root to improve the taste and soothe the stomach.
