About

Our Hawthorn Berries are the deep-red fruit (or 'haws') of the Crataegus tree, conveniently supplied in a 'fine cut' form. This cut is perfect for infusions, releasing a tart, fruity, and slightly sweet flavour. A celebrated herb in traditional Western and Chinese herbalism, it's most famous as a traditional tonic for the heart.

As always, it's advisable to consult with healthcare professionals for personalised guidance on health concerns.

Directions of Use

The fine cut makes this tough berry much easier to brew than the whole form.

1. Use 1-2 teaspoons of the fine cut berries per cup (250ml).

2. Pour over hot (not boiling) water, around 90-95°C.

3. Cover your cup and let the berries steep for 10-15 minutes to fully extract their flavour and properties.

4. Strain and serve. It has a pleasant, tangy, fruit-like taste that is lovely with a little honey.

5. Safety: Do not use if you are on heart or blood pressure medication without professional medical advice.

What are Hawthorn Berries?

Hawthorn Berries are the small, bright red fruits (called 'haws') that grow on the Hawthorn shrub (Crataegus monogyna). They have been used for centuries in traditional European and Chinese herbalism, most famously as a tea.

Heart icon

What are Hawthorn Berries traditionally used for?

In traditional Western herbalism, Hawthorn is one of the most celebrated herbs for the heart. It was used as a 'cardiotonic' to support cardiovascular function, circulation, and help maintain healthy blood pressure. This product is sold as a food-grade tea only.

Comparison icon

What's the difference between 'Fine Cut' and 'Whole' berries?

Whole berries are rock-hard and must be ground or simmered for a long time (decocted). 'Fine Cut' berries (this product) have been chopped, creating a larger surface area. This makes them perfect for a simple hot water infusion (steeping in a tea pot).

Flavour icon

What does Hawthorn Berry tea taste like?

Hawthorn berry tea has a pleasant, mild flavour. It is slightly sweet, tart, and fruity, with a taste similar to a mild rosehip or a tart apple. It is not bitter and is often enjoyed with a little honey.

Fruit icon

Can you eat Hawthorn Berries raw?

Fresh, raw hawthorn berries can be eaten, but they are very tart and have a large seed, so they aren't often eaten as a snack. These dried berries are hard and are intended to be brewed for tea.

Warning icon

Who should not take Hawthorn Berries?

This is a potent herb. You should NOT take Hawthorn if you are on any prescription heart medication (like digoxin or beta-blockers) or blood pressure medication, as it can interfere with them. Always consult your doctor before use. Avoid during pregnancy.
