About

Our Organic Flaxseed Meal is simply finely ground whole flaxseeds, often referred to as linseeds. This ready-to-use meal has a mild, nutty flavour and is packed with dietary fibre and omega-3 fatty acids. Grinding the seeds makes their valuable nutrients more accessible for digestion and absorption.

As always, it's advisable to consult with healthcare professionals for personalised guidance on health concerns.

Directions of Use

1. Add 1-2 tablespoons of flaxseed meal daily to your breakfast cereals, yoghurt, or porridge for a nutritional boost.

2. Blend into smoothies, protein shakes, or fresh juices to add fibre and healthy fats.

3. Use as a vegan egg substitute in baking: mix 1 tablespoon of flaxseed meal with 3 tablespoons of water, let sit for 5-10 minutes until thick.

4. Incorporate into baked goods like muffins, bread, or cookies, or use it to thicken sauces and gravies.

5. Due to the delicate nature of its oils, store flaxseed meal in an airtight container in the refrigerator and consume within a few weeks for optimal freshness.

Flaxseed (Linseed) Meal — Certified Organic, Australian Origin

Certified Organic Flaxseed Meal (Linum usitatissimum) — whole organic flaxseeds finely ground to a ready-to-use meal, sourced from Australian growers. Flaxseed meal (also called linseed meal or ground flaxseed) is simply the whole seed milled to a coarse-to-fine powder — the hard outer hull is broken open in the process, making the seed's interior accessible in a way that whole seeds are not when consumed without chewing thoroughly. The meal has a mild, pleasantly nutty character and a coarse, slightly gritty texture that integrates into smoothies, batters, and porridge without significantly altering flavour.

The primary practical advantage of meal over whole seeds is convenience — no grinding required at point of use. The trade-off is shelf life: the exposed interior of the ground seed is rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids that oxidise on contact with air, meaning flaxseed meal is considerably more perishable than whole seeds. Refrigerated storage and use within a few weeks of opening is essential to prevent rancidity. This product is certified organic, freeze-treated, and packaged for wholesale buyers. ⚠ May contain gluten, wheat, and soy due to farming and handling practices — confirm with current batch CoA. Available in 250g, 500g, 1kg, and 5kg bulk. This product is sold as a food only.

Flaxseed (Linseed) Meal — FAQs

Everything you need to know before you order.

The difference is particle size and therefore convenience versus shelf life. Whole Flaxseeds (FLAXWK1) — intact seeds with the hard outer hull protecting the interior from oxidation. Long shelf life (up to 24 months). Must be ground before use to access the seed interior. More economical for buyers who will grind fresh as needed. Flaxseed Meal (this product, HT.FLAXME1) — the same seeds pre-ground to a meal. The interior is already accessible — no grinding required. Significantly shorter shelf life (12 months sealed, a few weeks refrigerated after opening) because the ground seed is exposed to air and prone to oxidative rancidity. More convenient for direct incorporation into recipes without a grinding step. Choose whole seeds for bulk storage or grinding-as-needed applications; choose meal for immediate ready-to-use convenience.
Baking: fold into muffin, bread, and cookie batters to add fibre and texture — works particularly well in banana bread, dense muffins, and health-focused baked goods where the slightly nutty, earthy flavour is a positive addition. Vegan egg substitute (flax egg): mix 1 tablespoon flaxseed meal with 3 tablespoons water, let sit 5–10 minutes until gelatinous, then use as a binder in place of one egg. Works in muffins, quick breads, and dense cookies; does not replicate the leavening of egg white in aerated cakes. Smoothies and shakes: add 1–2 tablespoons to smoothies or protein shakes — the meal disperses easily and adds a slightly nutty background note. Porridge and breakfast: stir into porridge, overnight oats, chia puddings, and yoghurt. Thickening: flaxseed meal's mucilage content gives it light thickening properties in sauces, soups, and dressings — a small quantity adds body. Muesli and granola: scatter through muesli or granola blends for texture and flavour contribution.
Correct storage is essential for flaxseed meal because rancidity is a genuine quality risk. The high polyunsaturated fat content oxidises readily on air exposure, producing a bitter, sharp, paint-like off-flavour. Unopened: store in a cool, dry location below 23°C in the sealed original packaging. After opening: transfer to an airtight container and refrigerate immediately — use within two to three weeks. For longer storage after opening, freeze in an airtight container and scoop out what you need, resealing promptly. Signs of rancidity: a noticeably bitter, sharp, or chemical smell that is distinctly unpleasant and different from the fresh seed's mild nutty aroma — if you detect this, do not use. Smell the meal before each use as a quick freshness check.
A flax egg is made by combining 1 tablespoon of flaxseed meal with 3 tablespoons of cold water. Whisk the two together and let the mixture rest for 5–10 minutes without stirring. The mucilage in the flaxseed meal absorbs the water and swells to form a thick, gelatinous consistency — this gel functions as a binder in baking, similar to egg white. One flax egg (1 tbsp meal + 3 tbsp water) replaces approximately one medium chicken egg in most baking applications where the egg's primary function is binding: muffins, quick breads, dense cookies, and pancakes. It does not replicate the leavening, aeration, or structural setting of egg in cakes, soufflés, or meringues. Using fresh, non-rancid flaxseed meal produces a more neutral-tasting flax egg; older or rancid meal will impart a bitter flavour to the finished bake.
Flaxseed meal cannot be substituted cup-for-cup for conventional wheat flour — it has no gluten (which provides structure and elasticity in conventional baking), very high fat content (approximately 42%), and significantly higher fibre and protein content than flour, giving it very different binding and moisture-absorption properties. It works best as a partial replacement at 10–25% of total flour weight in most recipes — this range adds a textural and compositional contribution without structurally undermining the baked item. In gluten-free baking specifically designed for it, higher ratios are possible. In conventional baking, exceeding 25% replacement typically results in noticeably denser, sometimes gummy products. For applications designed specifically for high-flax content (low-carb breads, keto baking), recipes formulated for that ratio should be used rather than improvised substitution from conventional flour recipes.
The standard sizes listed — 250g, 500g, 1kg, and 5kg — are our regular stocked wholesale pack sizes, but The Herbal Connection is a wholesale supplier and can accommodate bulk orders well beyond these standard sizes. Whether you are a bakery, granola or muesli producer, functional food manufacturer, or large-scale buyer with ongoing requirements, we can discuss pricing and supply arrangements. The related product Flaxseeds Whole (Linseeds) is also available for buyers who prefer to grind as needed, with a significantly longer shelf life. Contact our wholesale team at sales@herbalconnection.com.au to discuss your requirements.
