About

Our Whole Caraway Seeds are a classic European spice, prized for their pungent, peppery, anise-like flavour. As whole seeds, they offer the freshest possible taste when crushed or ground. They are famous as the signature flavour in rye bread, sauerkraut, and goulash.

As always, it's advisable to consult with healthcare professionals for personalised guidance on health concerns.

Directions of Use

1. For the best flavour, toast lightly in a dry pan for 1-2 minutes until fragrant.

2. After toasting, lightly crush or grind the seeds just before using to release their potent oils.

3. Add whole or crushed seeds to rye bread, soda bread, or savoury biscuit dough.

4. Use in spice rubs for pork, duck, and goose, or add to cabbage dishes and sauerkraut.

5. Lightly crush and add to a tea infuser to brew a traditional caraway tea.

What are Whole Caraway Seeds?

Whole Caraway Seeds are the dried fruit of the 'Carum carvi' plant. They are a pungent, anise-flavoured spice, famous as the key ingredient in rye bread, sauerkraut, and goulash. Buying them whole preserves their potent flavour.

Flavour icon

What do Caraway Seeds taste like?

Caraway has a very distinct, pungent flavour. It is peppery, earthy, and has a strong anise (licorice) note. Toasting them brings out a warmer, nuttier flavour.

Comparison icon

What is the difference between Caraway and Cumin?

This is a common point of confusion, but they are not the same. Caraway is peppery and tastes like anise/licorice (used in German food). Cumin is savoury, smoky, and earthy (used in Indian/Mexican food). They are not substitutes for each other.

Fennel icon

Is Caraway the same as Fennel?

No. While both have an anise/licorice flavour, Caraway is much more pungent, peppery, and earthy. Fennel is significantly sweeter, milder, and more floral. Caraway is common in German food, while fennel is more common in Italian food.

How do you use Whole Caraway Seeds?

For the best flavour, toast them in a dry pan for 1-2 minutes, then lightly crush them. Add them to rye bread dough, spice rubs for pork, sauerkraut, or goulash. The whole seeds provide a pleasant 'pop' of flavour.
