About

Our Organic Aniseed (*Pimpinella anisum*) is a small, brown, crescent-shaped seed with a powerful history. Native to the Eastern Mediterranean, it carries a distinctively sweet, aromatic, and licorice-like flavour. It is a dual-purpose pantry staple: prized by bakers for biscuits and breads, and revered by herbalists as a warming digestive aid.

As always, it's advisable to consult with healthcare professionals for personalised guidance on health concerns.

Directions of Use

1.  Herbal Tea: Crush 1 teaspoon of seeds slightly with a spoon or mortar. Pour over boiling water and steep for 5-10 minutes.

2. Digestive Chew: Traditionally, a pinch of whole seeds is chewed after a meal to freshen breath and aid digestion.

3. Baking: Add whole or ground seeds to biscuits (like Italian pizzelles), rye bread, or cakes.

4. Cooking: Adds a sweet depth to curries, stews, and roasted root vegetables.

5. Infusions: Can be infused into spirits (like homemade Ouzo or Sambuca) or syrups.

What is Aniseed?

Aniseed (Pimpinella anisum) is a flowering plant in the apiaceae family. The seeds are small, brown, and crescent-shaped, known for their distinct sweet licorice flavour. It is used as both a culinary spice and a traditional digestive herb.

Comparison icon

Is Aniseed the same as Star Anise?

No. This is the most common confusion! Aniseed is a small seed from a bush. Star Anise is a large, star-shaped pod from an evergreen tree. While they both contain anethole (the licorice flavour), Star Anise is much stronger and pungent. This product is the smaller, sweeter Aniseed.

Flavour icon

What does Aniseed taste like?

Aniseed has a sweet, aromatic, and warming flavour that is distinctly 'licorice-like'. It is similar to fennel but generally sweeter and more intense.

Benefits icon

What are the benefits of Aniseed tea?

Aniseed tea is traditionally used as a 'carminative,' meaning it helps to settle the stomach, reduce bloating, and relieve gas. It is also often used to freshen breath and support respiratory health.

Fennel comparison icon

Is Aniseed the same as Fennel?

They are cousins in the same plant family and have a similar flavour, but they are different. Aniseed is smaller, darker, and sweeter. Fennel seeds are larger, greener, and have a more vegetable/herbal undertone.

Edible icon

Can you eat Aniseed raw?

Yes. In many cultures (especially in India and the Middle East), a pinch of raw or lightly toasted aniseed is chewed after a meal to aid digestion and act as a natural breath mint.
